Going from CSE to vanilla network

Morning all,

 

We're looking at possibly doing away with CSE and going to a Vanilla network.

 

Can anyone share their experience of uninstalling CSE? How easy is it to remove from the network and what state did it leave the network in regarding policies etc?

I haven't looked into uninstalling it at all yet I'm just getting ideas and starting to do my homework :-)

 

I imagine it's a big job and time consuming to do and that it will leave a nice big mess to clear up?

 

Any advice appreciated.

I did it, what I did:

 

*new DCs running side by side

*make a new OU

*Make vanilla client images

*Put PC with new images in new OU

What is CSE? Is it a bit like Ranger or CC3?

I agree with irsprint84, start a fresh with all your GPO's as well

I did this too, although it was a number of years ago now when they were running CAL4.

I'd agree largely with irsprint84, but you don't *really* need new DC's. Just create a new OU, block out inheritence and then go from there creating your own little test area. That way you have the luxury of looking back at CSE GPOs too if you want to tweak settings etc, and don't have additional expense.

 

Back when I did it I had to think about replacing (or keeping) Prism Deply for software deployment, and look at alternative OS deployment. I'm not sure if those are their current solutions these days, but you'll probably need to consider how to manage both deployments if you fully move away.

As you don't run exchange TBH making life easier you could probably start again - Sims is really easy to change domains (you can remove from one and add to another) File Servers are easily rebuilt and the clients can be rebuilt.

 

Then you have complete control over everything. And nothing is in there that can conflict with it.

Exactly what I done and yes I'm glad I did, with brand new policies from scratch. Left on original DC's though so could compare policies.

 

With the upgrade to Windows 7/2008r2 at the same time it has halved the time to a working desktop (so far).
