VPS Hosting Software

This may sound like a random question but I'm not sure if there is anything out there.

 

We have a server which is just about to be retired (its a dl380 G5 dual quad xeon 10gb ram) and I'm thinking of putting it to use as a VPS host of somesort for our Computer club which is just starting and giving students the ability to change whatever they like on the machines which can just be flattened again - I thought of indiviual vm's but that could take a while to install configure etc.

Those are hosting panels for configuring SQL, Apache etc.

 

If you're going down the VM route it's not that difficult to setup for something like this. You could use a Linux distro like ProxmoxVE to provide an easy to use interface for making VMs etc. As far as I remember, it uses KVM or Xen HVM which supports Windows VMs too.

Yeah what he said above about those john - I want more the control over starting/stopping vms, installing os's configuring. I use KVM in a cluster as our main vm hosts so will look at proxmoxve setup for the students

System Centre Virtual Machine Manager Web Management has the ablity to be used in a VPS style - also look at the Windows Server alternative to cPanel (enkompass) which as I understand is free.

go look at website panel, that will allow you to create VM's on the fly

I think VMware has some support linux for VPS. I know they did on the old Server editions they did.

VMWare does have support for linux. What I am after looking at is something for creating vm's on the fly from templates etc - so they can launch a vm and play around - if they break something/want to start again they just go to the web interface and rebuild.

OpenVZ is an open-source industry standard for VPS hosting. Not sure if it'll be totally suitable for your needs, however, but it's worth a look.

I wouldn't touch OpenVZ with a barge pole nowadays, especially with the likes of Xen around that provide much more stable platforms (and support Windows!)
