Hi All

Well after yet another PS3 update I find myself not been able to play movies which are streamed from my PC to my PS3 using PS 3 Media server.

On research I have found that Sony is putting stops to which films can be played on the PS3. For example, the Mrs watched Fast 5 which was ripped to the PC and it played fine, after a firmware updated she want to watch it again with friends got about 1/4 though the film and a message came up saying this film was protected and could not be watched.

The firmware was the only change and also mates which I have spoken with have had the same issue only after a firmware updated.

So my question is, I am now in the market to get a unit maybe like AC Ryan, which will stream videos / music stored on my NAS to the TV in the house.

I would like to know what you guys use, and how you find the units you have e.g pros and cons etc.

any advice would be very welcome, as its been a while since I have looked at these devices as the PS3 use to work fine for the past 3 - 4 years.

Anyway Please post away.

one of these: ION-based Desktops

Get XBMC on one of those and you'll have an awesome media centre :)

Don't know what Sony are playing at with the PS3, it must be the first console ever that has gradually had features removed as it's gotten older!

+1 for XBMC ... used to run it on an original Xbox but now have it on an old laptop, runs perfectly and will play any format I throw at it.

Hi All

Been looking around now for the past day, and decided to get an Apple TV, I have just jail broken it, and am about to install XBMC. Will update on how this goes over the weekend.

PS3 has been increasing its drm restirctions for a while, no such thing on the xbox thankfully :)

Not it hasn't, PS3 has had Cinavia protection for a while now and nothing related to streaming has changed since.

Other than Cinavia no additional DRM restrictions that would stop movies streaming. DLNA streaming still works. Like the 360 mkv wont work. Cinavia can be bypassed by unplugging from the internet and running from USB or modifying the PS3 firmware.

I would have to disagree. The movie I ref in my original post played fine around 2 weeks ago, and after the latest firmware upgrade I now get this is protected by Cinavia bla bla bla...

So in the FW updates Sony is making changes to its Cinavia block list should i say...

wont be long till you cant stream anything to your PS3

You movie likely had cinavia protection anyway, its just the cinavia was updated and this is unrelated to PS3 as cinavia protection requires an internet connection. A home proxy can stop this, its not very hard to work around.

I've got several TB of staff that still streams fine.

Possible, its just funny how this happened after the Firmware update, and a friend playing the same movie on a PS3 which hadn’t been updated was fine. Either way I think form what I have read XBMC is a way forward.
