Server 2003 R2 EE and Windows 7

How do these two operating systems work together. We will be upgrading our CAD suite and the server is currently Server 2003 R2 but the desktops will be Windows 7 64bit

 

I just want to know if there is any major issues with them there will also be XP machines on the network.

 

We just need to upgrade our aging CAD pcs to something with more RAM.

If your unlucky enough to have 16 bit software it won't run but this is unlikely (hopefully). Apart from that this guide from angry technician is pretty comprehensive for getting the policies for windows 7 in play as well as other things The Angry Technician’s Guide to Managing Windows 7, you Idiots « The Angry Technician . Most older policies will work but better to use the new admx ones.

I suspect your biggest problem will be printing [via the server] from the Win 7/64 machines. In theory the 64 bit printer drivers can be installed alongside the 32 bit drivers in 2003 R2, but I cannot make it work, and I have heard similar comments from others about this.

 

Another problem we have discovered is that the 'Previous Versions' function in 2003 no longer works, or is certainly not visible from Win 7/64. I thought I should mention this, as we find the Previous Versions function a real lifesaver, and is much quicker and easier than restoring a file from last night's tape.

 

Win 7 has it's own previous versions facility, but this doesn't work on network drives.
