Netgear router overheating?

Is this possible? Recently my connection has been slowing down to the point where it drops out. This happens 1-3 times a day intermittently, at first I thought it was my ISP but router restarts consistently fix the problem and I've been noticing the router is quite hot to touch.

yes it is possible, my netgear did the same and eventually wouldn't connect to the internet at all, went out and bought a new one all working fine, the router was around 5 years old when it finally packed up

completely possible... i've had a netgear wg602 access point do it, and a d link one, and a dlink router! i nursed the dlink router allong by cutting a hole in the case and mounting a heatsink and fan on it... kept it going for another 2 years! Edited December 12, 2011 by Oaktech

Netgear quality , very possible especially if consumer grade. They come with underspeced cooling solutions and often have their thermal medium fail between the IC and heatsink. You may be able to rip it open and re thermal paste a cpu heat sink on it making it much more stable but probably easier to just replace each year/six months.

Yeah. I alwasy find it reassuring that someone will always go 'You. Will. Work!' and then go to any lengths to make it happen.

yup mine did that when standing flat put it in the "stands" so its pointed upwards problem went away

I bought a netgear DGN2000 to go with my new TPG and my internet drops out all the time, about 2 to 3 times a day. I blamed it on the netgear overheating as well so I bought a different brand of router completely but it still does it..

 

So Im left to only assume its the ISP, or the dodgy internal wiring in my house here.

It always amazes me with how much bad press Netgear stuff gets, yet people still buy it.

 

We had a Zyxel router that failed last summer due to the heat it produced. Now using Draytek without any problems yet.

I have had 4 DGN2000's via replacement, the caps go in them. I think mine might be on its way out again. Time for a different router I think.

You think Netgear ones are bad, I went through a period of buring out a Dynalink modem ever two to three months. Got through about five of them before the warrenty expired When it did I got a different modem, a dirty rented Simmons one from the ISP that they get to replace when the dirty things burn out.
