Buffalo ADSL Wireless Router from Tesco

Just a warning about this box that Tesco are selling.

 

The router comes with a USB wireless stick. The router seems to work fine with whatever laptops I've connected them to but doesn't seem to want to talk to the device that comes with it in the box.

 

The 1st one I put in (next door neighbour) doesn't connect properly but it was an old Win98 machiens - so I thought fair enough - what can you expect.

 

But yesterday, at a TA's house, same thing happened with a 2 year old XP machine.

 

Basically, it just sits there - won't connect when you ask it to do it, then sometimes when you look away and look back again - its connected (and then it disconnects again)

 

1st setup was plain no WEP/WPA - 2nd time with WPA.

 

Didn't make any diff on XP machine whether I used windows zero config or the Buffalo client

Strange - both myself & or Managing Director have been using buffalo kit for ages, and always found it to be decent. Belkin is my "Wifi Shit-buy"

I think all wireless is flaky

 

I've got a buffalo AP myself and the stick supplied seemed to connect to it fine (from next door even) but it won't connect properly with the box it came with.

 

I'll be checking out Mr Buffalo's site tonight ti see if I can glean any info

PS - Don't tell me Belkins bad - I've just taken over a school with 7 of them around the place

I've seen this kind of thing happen before, generally it means that there is interference with the signal, connect to the router (via ethernet if possible) and change the channel from the default. You can use netstumbler/ministumbler to see what channels nearby ap's are using and select a different one. Bear in mind also that it's not just other wifi devices that can cause said interference.

I agree with Tom. I've got a Buffalo at home and one here at work - no problems at all. I know of 2 people who have had problems with the Belkin crap and read more negative reports on forums about them.
