Should be a easy one,

Just added a hp business inkjet 2280nt to the server and shared it, or so I thought.

Is there a way of quickly adding this to everyones profile?

Via Group Policy. You can add it for either users or computers. Depending on if you want roaming users to be able to use it or just a physical location.

i have gone in to Group policy management tool > created a GP called ICT suite > then gone in to computer config> admin templates> printers and now im stuck

How do you deploy your other printers.

Normally people do this through gpo and print management which creates a policy or a script that runs in gpo.

Ok, I had this problem when I started using Server 2008 R2. As 2008 R2 is 64 bit only, the drivers installed on the server side will be 64 bit. These will not work when your clients try to connect to them because your clients are 32 bit. You can test this by clearing all the drivers on your clients:

On a client go to printers

select a printer that is shared on the server (the one we are going to test) and delete it

Right click in the window and click server properties

click drivers

remove the driver for that printer

go to run

type \\yourservername

right click the printer shared on your server and click connect

if it errors when trying to install the driver then that is the problem

As Microsoft is totally useless, you cannot install a 32 bit driver on server 2008 R2, you have to (in their own words) get a windows 7 client, launch print manager, remotely connect to the server via it and then install the driver that way. More details are in my next post (sorry forum restriction!) (ignore the fact it is Vista and Server 2003, the process is the same):

Hope that helps,

Adam

A lot of drivers you can easily install straight onto the server, just install it as 64bit and go back to add the 32bit version using the tickboxes. There has only even been one printer that I needed to use the workaround method to install the driver for.

Im having real difficulty gettint the 64 bid driver on to the server, when on ther server i click in the x86 then have disk and go to the files i have from the hp site i get a the specified location does not contain the driver for ht HP business inkjet 2230/2280 HPA for the requested architecture???

I have tried installing the printer on the client the other way using the same files and it still dosent work.

Any ideas or a alternative place to get the drivers ?

The drivers from the HP site are always fine, although you might want to try re downloading them as it may have a corrupt file which happened during download. Also make sure that you are downloading the correct one from the HP site, there are many variants, PCL5, PCL6, post script, universal etc (I usually stick to PCL5).

The architecture message is happening because x86 is 32bit and you are attempting to install that onto a 64bit server. I have never been able to get a HP 32 bit driver to install directly to my server.

You can try downloading it straight to the client too. Also you might want to do what I said in my previous post on your test client and remove all the drivers (right click, server properties) just to give you a clean test computer.

Hope that helps.

Try the universal driver, if your luck it will work, but I can assume you that a print server that is 64bit will take the 32bit drivers from HP. I have just checked and I have 32bit and 64bit drivers installed for a HP Laserjet P4010 and the universal driver (PCL 5 and PCL 5.1).

1) My advice would be unistall the printer, and remove the drivers from the drivers section in Print Management.

2) Resrart the server (if you can)

3) Download the drivers you require again 32bit and 64bit

4) Extract the drivers to a location on your server e.g. C:\Drivers\HP\, then have a 32Bit and 64Bit subfolder

5) Open Print Management again, and open the Drivers section

6) Add the Drivers again, checking both the 32bit and 64bit box, when it asks for a location choose the 64bit driver location.

7) The Server will add a 64bit and error saying no 32bit driver exists, so now point it to the 32bit driver location, it should now have both.

8) Install your printer and choose the correct driver (from the list) and check both boxes again, the printer should install correctly.

If your driver will not work then the HP Universal driver definitely installs both 32bit and 64bit so try that.
