[ghost] Ghost over VLAN?

Is this possible? I've seen a few forums that say it is but I'm a bit lost.

 

We're currently running a VLAN through the neighbouring schools switch. I need to image 20 new netbooks. When I try to PXE boot it sits there searching and eventually times out and tries again.

 

Is this something that i need to contact link2ict about? Whos switch needs configuring? Or is it something this end? I've seen the terms dense and sparse thrown about.

Can you ping your ghost server over from the other VLAN?

Does the other "VLAN" get IP addresses from your DHCP server on your main native VLAN?

Hi, as long as there is no ACL (Access control list) on the Layer 3 Router/Switch managing the VLANS that stop particular traffic etc. you should be able to use Ghost, but...

 

Depending if multicasting has been allowed or not, at the very least you would have to specify the IP address of the Ghost Server and the images would only be sent as unicast (so would impact traffic on V/LAN).

Ideally the main layer 3 Switch/Router would need multicasting routing enabled and PIM-Dense Mode

 

3COM syntax

multicast routing enabled

pim dm

igmp enable

 

The above would normally be applied to the appropriate VLAN interfaces.

I see you are using PXE Boot, can't remember specifically but I think you may also have to add ip address of PXE Server to DHCP scope option/DNS.

Ah. Well I can't ping my ghost server. How funny, I've never bothered try since I can remote to it!

 

This is starting to get complicated. Might be easier just to take netbooks to our school with the server...

 

EDIT: *facepalm* ping works if you plug the cable back into the computer!!!

Will it actually PXE boot as in Ghost will start up and timeout looking for the Ghostcast server, or is PXE boot is failing altogether?

 

If it's failing to PXE boot, I would check and make sure DHCP options 66 and 67 have been defined in the scope. Without these the client won't know which server to contact, and what file to use to boot with.

 

If Ghost is timing out looking for the server then I would suspect issues with multicast traffic being able to traverse VLANs.
