Rumour has it Apple are planning a TV that can understand gestures and voice aimed at it and respond to them.

Firstly, I'm assuming iTV won't be allowed, you know, with consumers getting confused with the channel and the device both named the same....in the same way we get confused with a coffee shop called apple and a computer manufacturer, or does it only work one way?

 

Also, what exactly is this going to be used for? One quote says

The late Steve Jobs was quoted in a posthumous biography as saying: 'I'd like to create an integrated television set that is completely easy to use'

As opposed to the channel up channel down nightmare we live in now? Surely the idea of a TV is you sit there, you watch it and that's it. By integrated I take it to mean no remote, because there is very little else a TV can do isn't there?

So it will do things like "switch to BBC3"? Wowzers, I cannot wait [/sarcasm]

 

Seriously though, I take it this is going to be aimed at existing Apple users, so they can upload movies from another i device?

My guess is it's going to be a standard media center PC with an upscaled version of iOS on it and essentially SIRI.

 

Nothing new (other than the OS perhaps) but in true Apple style it'll be marketed as such and will more than likely be extremely successful... goddamnit.

although if it were to work like that, by the time you've had a to and fro with it, surely its quicker and easier to pick up a remote and press 3 (or 103 or whatever channel you have assigned to itv).

I'm not sure what more they can do with a TV that hasn't already been done. We're already getting TV's that can watch online videos like YouTube and iPlayer clips. We already have TV's that can browse the web. We already have devices and apps that can remote record, watch your saved TV on the go and so on. The only thing I can see being done differently is the marketing of this new Apple device to make a certain group of people think they need​ it.

Paint a tv white, smooth the edges, make it slim, apple logo, airplay built in and you have an apple tv RRP £200+ higher then the average TV of a simular spec

gesture controlled tv diddnt douglas adams predict that for stereos in hitchikers guide and show the pitfalls. Wont it be fun if you get up and randomly change the channel /mute etc

You're not thinking differently enough. On Apple's TV, channels will become apps, so if you want to watch Dave for example, you would open the Dave app, and so on. If programmes are downloaded/streamed over the Internet, the TV won't need a tuner either (I can definitely see Apple doing this).

Integrated to me, means integrated with the App Store and iCloud. Obviously, Apple's TV will include Siri.

 

Surely the idea of a TV is you sit there, you watch it and that's it.

I thought the idea of a TV was to view ripped DVDs and Blu-rays or TV programmes you have download from the Internet with the adverts removed.

 

In the future, TVs will be a lot more interactive and integrate with your favourite social networks. Just look at things like Zeebox or the Boxee Box. I'm sure Mark Zuckerberg would love to know what you are watching when you are not on Facebook.
