Adaptor or Amp ??

Currently I have 2 cables like per below :

 

Jack 3.5MM to 2 RCA iPod MP3 MP4 AV TV Sound Cable Lead | eBay

 

so a 3.5mm audio jack to 2 RCA ( left and right audio )

 

One of them is used to go from my mac mini to the M Audio AV 40 speakers ( 3.5 mm jack in the mac mini to the pair of RCA connectors on the speaker )

 

There is only one set of RCA connectors on the speaker ( one red and one white )

 

The other 3.5mm jack to RCA is going from the telly to the same speaker and I have to manually / physically disconnect the mac mini's RCA connectors to re connect the RCA connectors for the TV and visa versa which is a pita.

 

Need a solution that is cheap and cheerful ( as cheap as possible ) so I can connect 4 RCA connectors into 2

 

Only thing I can think of is an amp short of mauling the cabling and connecting both red cables together and both white ones together so they are both connected at the same time but not sure if this will cause issues

 

Any suggestions / thoughts ?

You need a switching box into which you plug both the TV and iPod outputs, you then plug the output from the switching box into the speakers. You'll need another RCA 2 RCA cable - total cost should be around £15 for switch and cable.

Possibly doubling the input voltage and making your speakers built in Amp smell funny and mistake itself for a smoke machine.

It isn't likely do that, but connecting two sources together is not good practice, and can lead to volume issues.

 

So, either a switch box, or a summing amplifier (which could be a challenge to find), or something clever with a dual variable resistor.

I'm guessing the speakers have their own amp built it? If so you will need a switch unit.

Best option, switch box.

 

You may find that a headphone splitter adaptor may work, but depending on the input/output impedance you may have volume issues.

 

Can you feed the TV via line in on the mac mini?
