Sending faxes from email

Our school office has just asked to be able to send faxes via email.

 

My initial reaction is to fob them off but thinking about it some more its actually a nice idea.

 

Has anyone else set this up? Do you use a hardware fax modem or an online service?

 

Having a quick google showed up this Turn Email to Fax | Fax Service | eFax but I'm not sure of the actual fax number involved.

What phone system do you have? We use to be able to do it with Elastix before we upgraded to Windows 7. (Works with XP, Hydrafax i think its called) It installed a printer locally , and when you printed to it a box popped up asking for the fax number to send it to and our VoIP server did the rest, was neat.

They have asked it to work like this:

 

The way that it work is you scan a document or fax to your computer then attach it in an e-mail and actually send like you are sending an email but using the recipient’s name and number i.e. [fax:joe.bloggs@01189222222].

I have used a few of these services all work much the same way you email the [email protected] and it works out the rest.

pricing is different some do a flat rate others per page etc

We used to use one for work about 8 years ago but then made the choice 3 years later to never send faxes again. in the 3 years we had the email to fax service we used it less than 10 times.

As for getting faxes, as a company the only fax we get is a spam fax about selling copiers, i think people have moved on.

Might be easier to setup an old pc with a fax modem in it - share the fax printer and let them print remotely to the fax machine.

I used to use GFI Faxmaker several years back. Coupled with a decent fax modem it did the job nicely. I can't remember the exact method of operation it used, but it integrated with Exchange and I don't recall any issued with it.

many companies still require fax as a form of proof. Email can be tampered with remember.

I know but more and more are accepting that a scanned image is just as good as a fax now.

but not all, our lea's contractor (atomwide) still need a faxed copy of a ccr for Nominated Contacts

I use Soho66.co.uk very quick and simple you get a dedicated local fax number for inbound and it's very reasonably priced.

This is not quite true - You can fax compelted Nominated contact forms to Atomwide but I'd much prefer then uploaded as scanend doc's into the support system - much quicker in actually fact.

 

If you want to fax in small volumes have a look at using a Cisco router attached to a pstn or isdn line - stunning how small a router you can get away with if you just want half a dozen faxes.

 

If you must send faxes to Atomwide that is how they are recieved via a Cisco router.

It's not mentioned on the paperwork - might help if it is easier for you to receive via the support site that the documents state this. The Last time i got sent a form about 6/7 weeks ago it said it needed faxing back. I may well have just been sent an old copy of the document.
