Dos_Box Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 I'm currently doing some testing and don't have time to setup a full Nagios VM. Since Nagios has now split into 3 forms, Nagios XI (a commercial supported version), Nagios Fusion (a cut-down version of XI as far as I can tell) and Nagios Core (the 'free' version) I want to take a look at Core. Does anyone know of a fully configured and ready to play virtual machine for this (VMWare or VirtualBox for preferance) I can download?

Dos_Box Posted November 7, 2011 Author Posted November 7, 2011 Not VM's though. That is the core software for install. I can see why people love The Dude and Spiceworks. My next challenge is Open NMS!

I'm working on an overview document artical, similar to the art packages one for free netwrok monitoring software, so that helps a lot actually The problem I have with the more industrial Linux based packages is that often they take a great deal of time and effort to 'get right', and I simply don't have the time.

glennda Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 I've had it running here for about a month - the only fidderly bit was to adjust the load settings and max number of processes. As on our webserver which also runs squid/dansguardian they tend to spawn multiple processes for each one meaning the warning goes off (nice annoying noise!) becuase there are too many processes. Also every morning when the computers boot the linux box which has fog's tftp boot on it warns that the load is too high as we wake up 500 machines at once!
jinnantonnixx Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 I've done a fair bit with the Nagios monitor on Ubuntu server, monitoring a bunch of Linux and Windows servers. It's working as a polling system, with NRPE agents running on the monitored servers, but I failed miserably trying to get SNMP traps to work. I can let you have my /etc directories if that's any good to you.

Dos_Box Posted November 8, 2011 Author Posted November 8, 2011 Yes, but you have to pay for it. I'm looking at free network monitoring tools for this article. Annoyingly, the Nagios Core VM on the DVD does not have a username or password for the webmin!

I have got the VM working, but the login page (which actually gives you the default username and password) refuses to accept them. See picture. Dos_Box Posted November 9, 2011 Author Posted November 9, 2011 I tried both of them already + the NagiosXI VM passwords. Very frustrating. I have a copy of NagWin (Nagios for Windows) I'll try and use. I got it to work a few days back OK, but really wanted a native version to test.

featured_spectre Posted November 9, 2011 Posted November 9, 2011 You can find such information in the file 'htpasswd.users' file located in the following directory '/usr/local/nagios/etc'. The file contains the user name, but u will find the password in encrypted form. Its a start.

It turns out that it claims the user does not exist, so I created one, set the password, restarted services, and it still will not let me in. I have now sent an email to Nagios asking for help as it shouldn't be this difficult!
