Marking leased equipment

Morning Guys and Gals,

 

Just wondered for those that lease workstations and laptops with an agreement to return the kit to the leasing company at the end of the term, I was wondering what you use to mark the kit as we have been told that any marks on the kit could have cost implications for us at the end of the term.

 

I just intend to get a Dymo labelwriter and create my own non permenant asset sticker. Any thoughts on this?

Permanent marker. Comes off with hairspray or deoderant so leaves no marks

I believe leases are useful, but you must beware of what your signing upto. Don't accept what a general IT sales person verbal description / terms of a leases as fact, check the small print and ask for a copy of the lease agreement.

 

I would say most reseller use an external Finance company, ask to speak to their representative and get your questions answered from the people who know.

 

Possible Questions to ask (I'm sure that there are many more)

• What happens at the end of the lease, do we own the equipment or have to send it back?
  
• If we want to keep it, what is the cost?
  
• How do we exit the lease early, what are the additional costs ?
  

Again leases can be a good thing and more and more people are using operational budgets to provide IT services. Look at the cloud services you may be considering, many of these have similar types of issues as an IT hardware/software lease.

Cheers guys, in the end we have opted for buying a dymo label printer and low adhesion labels. At the end of the day if anyone were to steal our Viglen Omninos, they will be in for a shock as we have changed the BIOS splash screen to show the school name and crest - Joe public wont have a clue.

 

PS our leasing is through syscap, who are used by a lot of schools and FE and its a zero percent operating lease over 3 years with the option to lease year 4 and 5 at between 10 to 15 percent of the original fee. They are in joint partnership with a lot of IT suppliers.
