MP3 DJ Software

Hi all. I'd like to use a laptop and PA system to play music for a party. I'm not sure Media Player is going to fit my needs and wondered if anyone can suggest some software (preferably free) that I can use.

 

I'd like something that will allow me to create playlists but that will allow me to slot tracks in if someone requests one. It would also be handy if it could mix between tracks and handle different levels of the different MP3's so I don't have to endlessly turn the volume up and down.

 

Has anyone done this sort of thing before that can offer some tips?

Can't be off this Virtual DJ

 

Used it for years both personally and professionally. The free version should be fine for your needs and as mentioned, it allows playlist creation and the ability to add stuff in automatically. PM me if you get stuck with it!

Right well Virtual DJ seems to fit the bill, I can mix tracks etc but I seem to be having a bonehead moment with play lists. I can create a list that I can then move to the decks to play but I can't find a way to just leave the laptop to play and mix a few tracks by itself for a while if I want a break, is this possible?

Yes that's possible but it's not in an obvious place - I struggled with this at first as well!

 

 

If you drag the tracks/playlist into the list on the bottom right hand side and then click on the little circle with the lightning bolt(?) in it, VDJ will play through the tracks and automix. You can rearrange further down the list when it is playing and add/remove tracks as you desire.

 

Clicking on the little scroll will also give you more options to customise the automix feature.

Traktor is excellent and it's what I use on my Mac. I also have Virtual DJ Home. Yes I'm a closet DJ.

I'm not a closet DJ just a cheap skate trying to avoid paying for a DJ to fill in between the band at my wedding

What I'd do personally is mix a few tracks now and record it. Do a few 20 minute mixes so that they are ready to go for the night and you don't have to worry about it doing anything stupid while you're off at the pisher/chatting up women ;)/etc

I used itunes. set a playlist up and crossover and worked for my needs. But will try and mix a few tunes in Virtual DJ and cheat with a long mix

Hi all, just thought i'd post back. I had a good play with Virtual DJ which is great but I didn't have confidence that I could manage the beast on the night and show a second person how to use it. I almost went with Media Player with crossfade BUT came accross Media Jukebox which is fantastic, it's super easy to use and has really good cross fade options and also lets you flick to the next track with crossfade which Media Player won't do. This is very handy with long tracks that you don't want to play until the end. Playlists are a sinch as well
