So, one thing we've lacked for the past few months since one technician left was an effective fault logging system on our computers. I don't need anything fancy , - there aren't many free versions as far as I can see.

All i want is for staff to go to a website, log a fault which is sent to a technician who can see it and fix it, and update the status stating the outcome.

Does anyone know of any sensible solution? I've tried the search facility and typing in free fault logging software brings up nothing but software...

Very annoying! Your insight people of this forum is as ever much appreciated!

+1 Spiceworks easy to setup and maintain. Got a nice front end for teachers to log in to and submit jobs. Which emails all technicians with updates as well. Links in with active directory very well so staff dont need to remember more passwords and usernames.

If spiceworks is a positive choice, how easy is it to install and run? Does one have to auto install on every computer or just once on the server?

Its quite easy, its mostly web based. You install the sever software on a windows computer (old pc, server, whatever). It shouldn't take very long to get it up and running, although you might need to do more tweeking later to get it how you want it.

If you want to use the inventory, then you tell it your ip range. You can get more detailed info if you tell it snmp names, and login accounts for your pcs and macs. It can then tell you if servers are offline, printers are out of toner, what software is on what computer. Its useful if you want to find out the differences between two pcs, or which computers are running an old version of office etc.

I think ours only took about 1/2 an hour for the basic set up.
