Help with printers

Sorry if this is a simple question but i cant figure it out.

 

we have our curriculum pc's on a network with ranger running everything is ok

 

we have other pc's that are not on the curriculum network i/e in the library. These computers are just logged on locally as user, however these computers need to print.

If i go add printer then the printers can't be seen.

 

If i go in to run then //domain controller I get a pop up box asking for user name and password so put in admin password and username then i can add the printers, print ect. Restart the computer and then the computer can see the printer but can't connect. With out having to do all the above again

 

Also on some machines when i try to do the above but get the following error

\\domain controler is not accessable. You may not have permission to use this network resource contact the administrator to find out if you have permission.

Multipul connections to a server or shared resourse by the same user, using more than one username, are not allowed. Disconnect all previouse connections to the server or shared resource and try again?

 

Any ideas?

Are the computers joined to the domain?

 

If they are why are people not using a domain account?

 

If they are why not add the printers to the machines with a script at user log on or with a group policy?

 

If they are not you can change the security on the server to allow everyone to access the printer. Then you would have to create a script that will install the printers and add this to the startup folder or a log on script locally on each machine. You can use these scripts to map drives as well.

This is how you set the security on the printers on the server Set or remove permissions for a printer: User Rights; Security Policy; Security Services

 

You can map drives with scripts like

net use w: \\server\path\folder /persistent:no

 

You can map printers with scripts like

 

@echo OFF

 

REM **Example Printers.bat file **

REM ** Set a variable called 'Location' on each pc

 

REM ** This line removes any printers from the profile

\\server\path\CON2PRT /F

 

REM ** These lines match the variable to a print share

 

IF %Location% == Room1 \\server\path\CON2PRT /C \\server\printername

 

store this in a printer.bat file

 

Put the con2prt file in the location that the pcs can access

 

Now on the pc in enviromental variables create a entry called location and as the setting the room number example Room1 see script above.

As con2prt is 32bit software and it will need to be run locally from the workstation if using a Windows 2008R2 server as we found on Win2kR2 con2prt will give unreliable connections when run from 64 bit server.

 

e.g. IF %Location% == Room1 c:\localfolder\CON2PRT /C \\server\printername

IF %Location% == Room1 c:\localfolder\CON2PRT /CD \\server\printername

As far as adding in an IP printer, it is fairly simple.

 

Control Panel / Printers

Add Printer

Local (No automatic detect)

Create a new port

Standard TCP/IP port

Enter in the IP address of the Printer

Then add in the drivers when requested.

When I'm adding printers to non-domain machines, I've found adding via IP address works the best. The Printers remain available permanently, whereas when added by shared name they can't use them if they aren't logged into the domain.
