The Internet has slowed right down coming through our CN box, reboots haven't cured it (this is the limit of my knowledge here  ).

Our admin network which doesn't go through the box is fine, I know there should be some slowing with the filtering but this seems more like dial up speed??

Sounds like the box doesn't have enough memory in it? What is the memory usage like?

Hint: Run 'free -m' from a console window and pay attention to the 'free' and 'used' totals.

Fair enough. I'm not familiar with CensorNets web interface (and I figure there's no harm in educating people the ways of the command line either). :)

You could try disabling fsynch() calls in the config -but make sure you have the box imaged first and are running it on a UPS as it can jepordise the db integrity. This made a noticable difference to our CN box and it's been running without a hitch for a couple of months.

You know you can change the colours used in terminal windows if you don't like the default white on black. :p

Yes but that would require them getting over their initial fears to do that

Th GUI shows:

Uptime: 1 dat 5 hours

Load average (1 min): 0.2

Load average (5 min): 0.7

Load average (15 min): 1.2

Active processes: 173

Free RAM: 73%

Disk space: 74122MB

Used Space: 3574MB

Free Space: 95%

How do I reduce the cache size? Yes I know, I really should take some time out and learn Linux!!

Cheers

Clear the squid cache. :-)

Happened a couple of times on our boxes.

How many concurrent users are hitting that box and is it authenticating against anything or do you have authentication disabled? Reason i ask is that you have quite a few processes running. If you dont have authentication running i'd probably start looking more upstream than anything else. Maybe reboot your router if you're running in bridge mode.

It is using AD for authentication, we could in theory have 150ish at some points on the Net in the same lesson, maybe more if we have cover teachers in suites.
