gshaw Posted September 23, 2011 Posted September 23, 2011 This is a strange one... machines are working fine, policies are applying but after a few hours some get a random Userenv error 1054 "Description: Windows cannot obtain the domain controller name for your computer network. (The specified domain either does not exist or exist or could not be contacted). Group Policy processing aborted." The only thing that's changed recently is that we've VLAN'ed our switches so unless they need a firmware update I could only point the finger of blame at recent Intel NIC drivers (as this is coming up on machines made from different images) We've got "Wait for network" enabled and don't experience problems at logon so a bit miffed why it decides to complain 5 hours later!

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters] "DisableDHCPMediaSense"=dword:00000001 Try updating your NIC drivers as well, often helps. 1
gshaw Posted September 23, 2011 Author Posted September 23, 2011 (edited) Funny enough I was using that when trying to get Realtek NICs to work the other day... is this a new "feature" of XP nowadays in conjunction with dodgy NIC driver updates that helps hasten the move to 7 I wonder... The drivers are near enough the most recent available having only built the images in August. Did you experience that error on startup or later on as well? Edited September 23, 2011 by gshaw
