MK-2 Posted September 21, 2011 Posted September 21, 2011 The wife and I are thinking of doing a few nights in NY next year, and are considering some of these holiday let sites where you can rent someones apartment/house instead of going to a hotel. Has anyone ever done stuff like this before? Any pitfalls we should watch out for? Also, where would be the best area to look for a place in NY? We want to do the normal touristy things (empire state/central park/times sq/statue liberty). So looking for somewhere vaguely central. I know we'll need to use the subway to get around but at least an area near enough to most of these would be good. Lastly, are there any other sights people can recommend? We did want to perhaps visit some museums there, any recommendations?
jcollings Posted September 21, 2011 Posted September 21, 2011 We are off to NY for Xmas and are staying near Times Square although in a hotel. Just be aware they are closing the Statue of Liberty for a year from Oct 29th though which is disappointing as we really wanted to do that. MK-2 Posted September 21, 2011 Author Posted September 21, 2011 ah well thats one out then, so might look for places closer to the rest anyway. thanks for the heads up
JoeBloggs Posted September 21, 2011 Posted September 21, 2011 I went to New York in June this year. We stayed in Chelsea, nice area and close to a lot of stuff. Just remember that NY is damn expensive. A good area to go is the "meat packing" area. Really nice trendy bars and restaurants. Although you may need to book a reservation at most of them, and they are not cheap - but worth it. General stuff I saw was; Empire State building, Times Square, Statue of Liberty, Rockafella building, National History Museum + Science Museum attached to it, Ground Zero, 9/11 memorial museum. Book in advance of Statue of Liberty if you want to actually go up it, as it sells out in advance.
JoeBloggs Posted September 21, 2011 Posted September 21, 2011 Just to add, Liberty Island is still open. When I went I just went to Liberty Island (cost around $20) - we never went actually inside of it (which apparently is going to be closed, but does cost an additional amount anyway) - I would still recommend going to the Island, you can't go to NY and not really!
somabc Posted September 21, 2011 Posted September 21, 2011 Good Places to stay - Midtown (near Times Square / Central Park) or Downtown ie. Soho, Greenwich Village, Tribeca.

Yeah just go to the Island it is not worth climbing up anyway!
ZeroHour Posted September 21, 2011 Posted September 21, 2011 Awesome site for you: Vacation rentals, private rooms, sublets by the night - Accommodations on Airbnb I know a few that have rented from there with great success (although not NY specifically)
MK-2 Posted September 21, 2011 Author Posted September 21, 2011 Cheers for the tips guys and thanks for the site ZH. I'd seen quite a few but this one seems more personal than the rest.
