Network Drive issue

Hi

 

We run a mix of XP and Win 7. On the profiles in AD it is set that the home folder is H: \\server\%username%$

 

and on login a bat file that states

 

net share H: /home

 

this works in XP - but in Win 7 H:\ is not set to the home share. Yet the Documents folder is linked OK.

 

Any thoughts?

Normally the home drive should be mapped without that batch file - for us, just setting it in AD has always been enough, both on XP and 7.

 

Does H: map at all in 7 (i.e. does the drive appear but is broken), or is it absent entirely?

Any errors in logs? There is an option in gpo to automatically map the home directory from ad rather then needing to put it in login script.

You should be using UNC paths e.g. \\server\year2011\ when mapping the My Documents (and other simlar folders) with Windows 7 (and its best pratice in XP as well) - if you are trying to map it against a network drive it just simply won't work.

 

This UNC process is called 'Folder Redirection' you can find it in the User side of Group Policy.

H: which is what the folder share is set to in AD and works in XP doesn't work in Win 7.

 

Have taken out net share h: /home in the script too. Other drives map fine either by script or using AD. Just not the home folder. No issues at all in XP.

Might sound obvious but it once got me. There aren't any card readers or anything on your windows 7 machines that might be taking up H: drive? Windows 7 hides unused drives by default so might still be hogging H: even though it doesn't show in my computer.
