Connecting speakers doesn't disable on-board sound

I have two PCs doing this, both with XP SP3.

If I connect speakers or headphones to the audio jack at the back (or the front) of the PC, sound comes out of them :), but it still comes out of the on-board speakers too :(

Any ideas?

Have you got the extra sound control pannel stuff from the soundcard vendor as there is probably a setting buried in that somewhere.

We've been through that pretty thoroughly and found nothing. It's realtek... I'm going to see if there's a newer version.

It is usually related to jack sensing and the soundcard mode, sometimes it goes into surroud mode rather than stereo and so just sees them as extra speakers rather than replacments. You also want the right drivers for your system as hp customizes some so that they react differently with the wrong drivers.
