Just shows that the marketing spiel of the companies selling 'clouds' is bunk in a lot of cases. They still rely on all the same technology as everyone else, and it appears that backup systems just aren't reliable enough.

Highlights the main problem for me - your always trusting someone else to make sure things are done right, never actually knowing if any of this stuff is going to work during a disaster (though you have been reassured it will by the salesmen, of course).

 

Then it fails. And oh dear now you know that it may not work.

 

Seems to be a backwards step to me. I'd rather know definitively - we have installed all of this and all of that and tested it and it works. Or, we have this point of failure and that point of failure and it is not cost effective to address it but we know about it and can plan around it.

 

At least we know where we are rather than guessing, and hoping.

That lightning strike also knocked out the tram system in Dublin for an evening - I was most upset my drinking was interrupted...
