Artificial grass

has anyone had any experience of this? We are looking at all options for our back garden, and this is one of them. I know it's more expensive per sqm than turf but the long term upkeep would be less.

I saw a couple of samples at homebase last night which didn't impress me massively in it's texture and feel, but I know there are more expensive higher end options. Has anyone walked on them barefoot, how do they feel? I know it won't be exactly like grass but as long as its not as crackly and crinkly as I have in my mind I'm open to it.

 

I've emailed a couple of companies for samples but was after opinions too

my advice would be concrete. less maintenance and easier to to fix cars/motorcycles on without loosing screws

The school is having some artificial grass put down in the outside play area (we're located in a large town-house, with outside areas below street level, so real grass wouldn't get enough light). There's a sample downstairs on the bursar's desk - it comes complete with little brown bits in the grass, and looks practically indeshtinguishable from the real thing. When it's laid down I'll nip outside with my shoes and socks off and give it a go and report back to you.

 

If your grass is simply getting worn, you could look at plastic matting that you place just on / below the surface of the lawn and sow grass over the top. My Dad was impressed with it when he installed it at a couple of houses that wanted a hard-standing for parking cars but still wanted a nice lawn. I don't know what that's like to run around on barefoot, mind.

 

You don't have to have a grass lawn, of course - you can get alternative hardy alpine lawn mixes these days (tend to be good in droughts), or you could always just go for moss.
