2008 R2 Documents

hi everyone

 

just a quick question is there a fix for this issue at all?

 

I have 3 servers 1 is 2008 and the other two are 2008 r2

 

the clients are all windows xp but i will be adding a few windows 7 clients on shortly but for some reason on folder redirection of Documents under all pupil accounts doucments is actually My Documents I have tried logging in with a mac to the network and it is also looking for Documents.

 

If i go into an account and rename the My Documents to Documents it works great both windows 7 and mac can see the documents but if i then go and log into an xp machine it recreates a My Documents folder with nothing in the folder?

 

is there anyway to fix this so that no matter which machine i log into i am going to have access to the documents folder with everything inside?

We have redirected all documents folder to a sub folder called documents using a GPO.

 

for example:

\\fileserver\staff\%username%\Documents

 

Solves that problem really easily

did that work for both xp and windows 7? because i redirect to specfic locations ie. \\fileserver\year\%username%

 

so do i just change this and add documents on at the end ?

Yup it works for both. The reason is because of desktop.ini likes to rename the location that documents is redirected to. It doesnt technically rename it, it just makes it look like it does. So by putting it a folder below the root \documents not everyone's folder will be renamed to "My Docume

i gave the adding \documents onto the location a try but this doesnt seem to work because we use advanced locations for each year group so we specify each year group to go to a different folder and for some reason it always calls it my documents.

i am now wondering should i just instead of seperating out by year group should i just redirect everyone to the same folder ie instead of \students\year group\%username% just redirect it to \Students\%username%

I use advanced settings also. Do this:

\students\year group\%username%\documents

 

The documents folder will look like it's called My Documents but that's fine since it's not a root folder.

 

You might need to delete some desktop.ini files in those other directories if they got created already due to testing the redirection.

 

Better yet - delete your paths and start from scratch using the redirection above.
