new sony handy cam uploads mpeg but....

I'm sort of a novice so bare with me please...

I'm a fishing guide and I own my own forum.In trying to help others I've been doing a line of videos. Well in trying to improve the quality I had bought a Sony Handy Cam. After last weekends shoot I uploaded 2 days worth of video. The video is in MPEG. My operating program is windows xp and does not recognize MPEG but it does AVI which was no issue with my Sony Cyber Shot.

So here I'm sitting with several short 30 second to 2 minute clips .I've tried to update codec. No help...I went to Microsoft Fix It and no help there either.

Outside of buying a program to convert each clip one at a time which seemed to take forever on the trial versions...what else is there?

My lap top has windows 7 and it reads them ,but it is cumbersome during the editing process.

 

What's the plan of action????

Maybe I'm missing something, but any reason you don't use newer codec? By default xp doesn't like mpeg but many codecs do work.

 

There's many free online sites and freeware that will convert it (i'd use online if so short clips) so no issue with trial or OS.

 

And how do you mean it's cumbersome on vista? If it's only 2min clips max should convert easily?

Look at winff it will let you batch convert.

By default XP doesn't like MPEG

That depends on which MPEG you are talking about. MPEG-1 videos are supported out-of-the-box by XP, although I imagine this is probably not the format Keith's camcorder is recording videos in.

 

Would it be possible to post the exact model number?

HDR-SR11 is the handy cam model#

My xp show the thumbnail as an mpeg it does not have a # correlated to it unlike my cyber cam that shows the 1st frame in the thumbnail.

Video: MPEG-4 AVC (a.k.a. H.264) - 1080i or 720p
Audio: Dolby Digital (AC3)
File Extension: MTS

[b]SD[/b]
Video: MPEG-2
Audio: Linear PCM
File Extension: MPG

 

Which program(s) are you using to edit the video in Windows XP and/or 7 as this will determine whether you need to convert the footage into a different format.

I had been recording in SD...do you think it would have been better to record in HD? I was thinking that I'd have more room on the mem card if I recorded in SD.

Well I bought a converter program and now I have the mpegs in AVI...however the microsoft movie maker keeps crashing while I'm working in it and now it won't save to my putor.

I have tons of gigs of space in my videos to save it too.

How big a movie is it you're doing, in file size? And how much free RAM do you have?

 

Older versions of movie maker (and maybe modern not sure) "have" to load the entire movie output to RAM before being able to save. Not sure why, just had this problem a lot before

The movei is gone...couldn't save it to my computer and I'm not remaking it.
