Limesurvey - stuck at install

I'm trying to get a limesurvey test box working. Installed ubuntu 11 and set up as a LAMP server.

 

PHP is working according to phpinfo and I can login to the mysql server.

 

But when I run the first stage of limesurvey where you browse to the \admin\install folder to run the install stage, all I get is a blank page (http 500 error)

 

As far as my limited knowledge goes, everything seems to be working (php,mysql,apache) so I'm a bit stuck.

 

I've checked the limesurvey forums but theres not much relating to an error like this?

is there anything in /var/log/apache2/error.log that helps with identifying the problem?

I would look at the file permissions that you hav eon the Limesurvey directory. I installed a limesurvey a while back and never had any problems other than with file permissions.

Run

sudo tail /var/log/apache2/error.log

(where 500 errors are saved) immediately after trying the installation.
