The alternative then is to used a plugin for VBulletin to restrict editing to users with more than 10 posts, problem solved as far as I'm concerned.

With us dumping vbulletin in the nearish future, I think @ZeroHour's time is better spent on the new build

I'm using Alexa, Rankings.com seems to be one of those that you describe as being innacurate.

We stopped useing Alexa a long while back as it relied partly on stats gathered from a toolbar, and considering how many of our members here would never stoop to having something like that lurking on their browsers it sort of makes it redundant for regarding stats for EduGeek.

As their site says:

Alexa's traffic estimates are based on data from our global traffic panel, which is a sample of millions of Internet users using one of over 25,000 different browser extensions. In addition, we gather much of our traffic data from direct sources in the form of sites that have chosen to install the Alexa script on their site and certify their metrics. However, site owners can always choose to keep their certified metrics private.

I have to admit that a few years back Alexa had us at about 19,000 then almost overnight dropped us to about where it is now, even though our traffic was growing hugely.

In short net ranking sites are at best crystal ball gazing and until every site on the net uses the same script and metrics to be judged against each other there is no real way of judging a sites real place in the internet.

Regardless of where the data comes from (Alexa gathers analytical data from sites directly in addition to a plugin, unlike Ranking.com which relies entirely on a toolbar called 'browser accelerator'), the forum I moderate for has roughly 5 and a half times the userbase of this one, so ultimately has more traffic than this.

I appreciate you're busy with configuring a new forum, but honestly this would take a day or two at most to fix.

ooOO :) Xenforo?

If so, then you basically won't get any more spam problems. They are right on top of that and it has excellent features.

I think the case here is you've had your answer. Time to accept it and move on.

I personally don't like people being able to edit posts after a significant amount of time, as it allows for "altering history" and can ruin a threaded discussion.

So, spam or not, I prefer there being a 3 hour time limit!

@JRowley - you could always set up your own tech forum if you think you could do it better :)

I could but I would rather just help improve this one, this would benefit everyone and make the forum a much more useful tool. There shouldn't be anything wrong with encouraging improvements, or at least suggesting that the possibility be explored. So far everyone's just been very defensive about it and not really looked at it from a user point of view, it is an inconvenience, a big one.

I honestly think it should be trialled, perhaps just in one small section if people are concerned about it. If the spamming issue is as big as you suggest then it will show up even in a small section, though I doubt very much you would see any.

In practice this doesn't happen, though if this was a major concern you can get plugins to retain original edits and have a wiki style edit history. I don't really feel I've had an answer either, just an explanation as to why it's not permitted, though seemingly it hasn't been tried in years and years, so I see no real reason not to continue pursuing it until it has been tried in some form.

I also reported this about 5 years ago and nothing was done then...

Just as an example, check this thread made just this morning for another person not being able to edit their post the next day.

Telling people to just go start their own forums is a very dismissive and not helpful at all.

You seem to be trying to turn anecdotes into facts. I can say the same thing "In practice this does happen", based on my experience on other forums...

Devil's advocate, some sort of "trusted user" feature?? ie sign up, post a few times etc, welcomed into community, apply to become a trusted member (mod's make decisions on this.) once trusted you can have elevated privileges such as editing older posts?

Sorry you find the site lacking, but you have had answers from both the main men at EduGeek, Dos_Box and ZeroHour, and the answer remains 'not for the time being'.

On the scale of completely redeveloping the site, a couple of days effort on something that will not be around for much longer is not time well spent. Keeping EduGeek up and running technically and developing the apps and the next version is a full time job for one man, ZeroHour, and he has to prioritise his time accordingly. As it is, he is already nocturnal and, were it not for caffeine, you would have much more to complain about.

Shall we let this thread go to sleep for the time being?

Please don't lock threads, its just about the most annoying thing any mod can ever do!

I said nothing about locking threads and that is not my intention. However, circular arguments about a point that has been accepted by the site owners, but will not appear in the current version of EduGeek, are pointless.

Maybe it's something they can use and look to try and implement in the new forum? Surely having a debate and throwing some ideas about isn't a particularly bad thing...

Indeed, but no one has presented any facts in this thread to suggest it is an issue.

Is there a legitimate reason not to trial it on a small section? Just flip the switch and see what happens for a week, the likelihood is that nothing will happen, and at worse you see a few old/dead threads being altered. The Vista section for example was recently mentioned as being effectively ready to be closed/merged as there has been very little activity.

At risk of going round in circles though here is my original post from 2011

Ah, I think I see part of the problem with your viewpoint - you think that old posts are "dead" and therefore fodder. The majority of visitors to Edugeek, as far as I'm aware, are "reference visitors". I.e. They come here to read those old/dead threads. I'm pretty sure @Dos_Box wouldn't want to go making the lives of mods even more difficult too.

That's not part of the problem at all, alot of threads are useful as reference as you said, but alot of other threads aren't. It was an example of a section which has recently become less active, my coin of phrase isn't particularly relevant.

Not to mention that for those old threads which are relevant to be edited would require their original posters to edit them. Which isn't the problem which is being described, so it wouldn't happen anyway.

OK last post from me.. Here is how its done if this ever does get approved:

vBulletin options > Message posting and editing options > Time Limit on Editing of Posts

Like I said, it has been taken on board for the next version.

This particular mod has finished, so you guys can carry on arguing if you must. However, we reserve the right to lock the thread without notice if it carries on repeating the same old same old as per the forum rules. I would suggest that everyone has better things to do with their time than keep this thread stoked.

In the mean time as it seems even a trial is unlikely at this stage, who do I PM to have a post changed, I would PM the moderator of the forum in which the thread resides but I can't find moderators listed anywhere?

I'm 100% sure that Shaun knows exactly where the option is within the board software however as has been repeated several times it's not being considered for the current implementation due to the excessive amount of spam that is already being dealt with and that's the end of it.

Threads will get locked for good reason so whether you find it to be the most annoying thing a mod can do is a matter of opinion.

Just report the post with your edit request, this way it is shared with all the Mods and the first free one can edit it for you.

I sent someone a PM, to my knowledge reports don't support bbcodes so I can't use it, unless I'm wrong?

Actually that's not as relevant as I thought, I will report in future, thanks.
