Hi everyone

hoping that someone can help me with this issue, we just got a new H3C S5500-EI switch and i am trying to use the 8 10/100/1000 Base-T ports but they are not lighting up when i plug the servers into them. I have logged into the console but cannot find anything to do with the ports other than status to say that those specific ports are shutdown would anyone at all have any idea how i can change this status from shutdown to switched on for use?

Hoping someone can help me with this issue

Are they dual personality linked with other physical ports? ie are the there 2 sets of 8 ports with the same numbers next to them, one set for gbics and the other for copper?

As you can only use 1 out of the pair.

Hi Sparky

They are dual ports if i use ports 25-32 (1000Base-T) then ports 17-24 cant be used but i dont have anything plugged into ports 17-24 to be used I am only trying to use 25-32 but when i log into the switch to see if says that those ports are shutdown

Don't bother with the web interface, learn the CLI

just log on to the switch with console, telnet or ssh (use putty on windows)

then go to system view

 sys

change to the port (probably g1/0/25 for gigabit, first switch in stack, zeroth module, port 25)

 int g1/0/25

show the current status

 display this

if the port is shutdown then

 undo shutdown

get out of sys view

 quit

(perhaps twice to get out of interface view)

save

 save

I was directed to this thread by Aaron (who I've replaced in this school) - your advice Cybernerd was fantastic thanks, but just wondered something I hope someone can help with. This switch suffered a series of power cuts over the stormy weekend, and as such I lost the ability to use the Cat 5 ports on it. I have checked the switch config using putty & found them set to "shutdown" - so I set them to undo shut down & saved changes. Unfortunately still no lights on these ports when I connect a cable to them.

Can you advise if there is anything else I need to check? Thanks!

Do a factory reset to start with (erase startup-config) , save it as it stands and see how that fairs when it restarts. Obviously if the network isn't flat (i.e. you've got vlans set up, snmp etc) then save the config first.

No VLANS at all - I simply use the switch for the Fibre connections & some managed switches are daisy chained off the RJ45 ports... network only working on 1/4 capacity at the mo :(

Need to wait till everyone leaves later before I can factory reset the switch but will try that- thanks
