Disk Quotas

Hi, how do you deploy quotas to large volumes of users? You can't select groups for quotas, so you can only use users, however when it comes to setting quotas for large numbers of users, the usual process of creating a quota for a user must become quite tedious. So how's everybody else setting their quotas?

This is how we did it to.

 

FSRM is also good for setting up alerts when students try to save things they perhaps shouldn't (batch files, mp3's, torrents, etc) or for blocking types of files.

 

Unfortunately it can't stop the clever/annoying ones renaming a file as .doc for example then saving it

Hi All,

 

Previous we were using the old "Disk Quota" on the whole drive.

When a vista or win7 user logs in the see the DISK SIZE and not their QUOTA SIZE displayed.

 

They see`s their mapped drives in My Computer the graphical and written sizes of the drive would appear to be their OWN correct max quota size etc, "500mb" with say 242meg used.

 

With FSRM all our mapped drives appear as the size of the total drive, e.g 1.8tb total with 1.2tb used, the usage shown is everyones usage. instead of the above?

 

Also when the quota is reached, it says "There is not enough space Free Space 600mb, total 1.8tb"

 

Is this correct? surely not?

 

EDIT: This seems to be the problem, but it is supposed to b fixed in vista/win7?

Just noticed that all other drives have the correct quota, its just the Home share that it showing the full drive size?????

 

 

I have shared the users home folder and ammended the mapping from

\\server\staff_drives\test_user

to

\\server\test\user

 

But this would mean sharing every single users home drives? And when we create a new user manually setting up the share each time...

 

Is this how everyone else does this? Are home staff and home drives shared ?

We have the usual type of setup here. One share for pupils (then a year folder and then a folder per pupil created when we make the acount). Similar for staff

Ok So I can create a template and for new folders it will put the quota settings on. But how do I get it to apply to already created folders?

I just can't get my head around this for some reason.

When you create the quota in FRSM, select the box "Auto apply template and create quotas on existing and new subfolders". It will then apply that quota to everybody's folder in the folder you selected. So all of the users in the \\fileserver\pupils\year10 folder, will now have quotas of 1GB e.g.

Sorry to refresh bit old topic.

What if you need to increase quota for specific users? Lets say you have 2 pupils who are doing some media video processing?

Do you need to create another quota just for each user?

@kcymer You can just create another template for the size you want and apply it to those specific users folders, this over rides the folder on the parent folder.

Bit of a problem

 

Got alocated quota with auto-quota on users parent folder but for user it still shows whole drive size, not actual quota. I heard it was a problem in 2003/XP but was sorted in 2008/7. Can this be fixed?

It is an issue on XP and can't be fixed. Think there was a thread on here somewhere about it.

 

I can confirm it does work on Win7/2008.

I'd made a little app with an idiot-friendly pie-chart before I hit that one. IIRC it gets it wrong if you try and get the quota on a drive mapped to a folder below a share e.g. to \\server\usersshare\Joe Bloggs. In principle if you have a drive mapped directly to a share it gives you the right numbers, but it was too late for me to change that and I hate having lots of per-user shares, so who knows...

 

MS blamed no capability for getting it right in the SMB v1 protocol XP uses, but said SMB v2 fixes it..

XP and windows 7 both correctly show the share size on a SAMBA share, so the problem may not be with XP, rather windows servers.
