Mulitcast Filtering on Procurve Core

Hi,

 

Just having a look through my HP Procurve 5308 web config pages and I've found an option

 

Mulitcast Filtering (IGMP): Off

Direct multicast packets to only those portions of the network where they are needed. This improves network performance in networks using the IGMP protocol with high levels of multicast traffic.

 

If I set this to on to try improve the network performance, is there a chance I could break something? Maybe lose connection to the switch entirely and not be able to put it back on?

What software do you use that requires Multicast?

Turning this on should not have any detrimental effect on the network or the switch - at least, i've done it here on the 5308's we have, and there were no problems.

Looking at the Port Utilization page none of them have any Mulitcast traffic so I may leave it and loko again when I'm ghosting.

 

Interestingly though out of all the ports there's only really one with much traffic at all going over 10% untilization. D15.

 

Been through to try find out where it goes to but the cable disappears into the ceiling. Any idea how I can track it down?

You need to buy/hire/borrow some cable tracing equipment.

Actually, looking down the Port Status List, all the ports are 1000FDx which I presume means 1000Mb Full Duplex.

 

There is the odd one set to 100FDx and a couple on 100HDx (presumably HalfDuplex).

 

Port D15 which is the one with seemingly high traffic in percentage terms but not actually looking at the data transmitted is actually showing as 10HDx. Which would be the slowest possible mode it could ever be right?

 

I'm sure they're all set to Auto mode though so why it has set itself as that is beyond me.

How do I go about setting it to 1000FDx?

Ok I've changed it to 1000-Auto and now it's status is Down not Up.

 

Ill have a play and see what works and what doesn't and who tells me they're computers are broken.

 

I know, not the most sensible or professional way to work shhhhh.

Is it a printer? Auto works nearly all the time, and should be used when dealing with Gb links. If it doesn't do 1Gb on auto, I would suggest that it isn't a Gb device.

I suppose it's always a possibility.

 

Incidentally it is the only port that logs many problems in the Status Overview page. 'Excessive CRC/Alignment Errors' but mostly 'Excessive Broadcast's and 'High Collision or Drop Rate' errors.

Found it.

 

It's what our PIX firewall is plugged into.

 

Which will need replacing if we get the 100Mb connectio nour ISP keep talking about.
