Windows 7 x64 not using 8GB RAM

Hi all,

 

Any ideas on this one. Just got me a new PC (woo!) and stuck in the recommended HP RAM to get the system up to 8GB RAM from 4GB. BIOS (even after flashing to lastest version 1.09) doesn't recognise the extra RAM, only shows 4GB. Weirdly Win7 knows the system has 8GB but is only using 4GB as shown in cap.

What type of machine is it?

 

In your BIOS, got to Advanced - Chipset Configuration and set Memory Remap Feature to Enabled.

I had this myself, this is what I did.

 

• Go to Run and type msconfig.
  
• Once you do this a box will come up and then go to the boot tab.
  
• On advanced options on the boot you will find two options, number of processors and max memory.
  
• Select the box max memory and it should automatically put the amount of memory installed.
  
• Once you reboot it will allocate more memory to your sytem but still hold a bit back for hardware requirements.
  
• Like mine has 8 GB and has only 6.75 GB usable.
  
• If you check the resource monitor it shows that I have 6.91 GB available to me directly and the rest to hardware requirements.
  
• Without doing this process, I had added 8 GB and only 2 GB was usable.
  

 

 

Once you do this and also set the number of processors to the max at what you have, quad core (4), dual core (2) along with the max memory change it will allow your computer to boot faster and shutdown faster. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the replies chaps, tried all of the above still to no avail. So I took the side off the PC and started fiddled with the supplied RAM. Turns out that the extra RAM was SIMM and the supplied RAM was DIMM and they were mixed up in the same channels. So separating them into their own channels sorted it out.

Shouldn't you have the full 8GB RAM available? This is what my Resource Monitor looks like...

Sorry this is unhelpful, I just wanted to share the totally wasted RAM in my workstation (it originally came with xp64bit SOOOO BAD, Vista was great though.
