geekgirl Posted June 22, 2011 Posted June 22, 2011 Hey guys, This may sound silly but a member of staff called us about a little spider that appears in only IE, we first noticed it on her home page (google) and then on her deskop too. She had loads of toolbars installed, they were uninstalled by our lead technician but it seems the little spider is still there. If you click on it it moves its little legs and sometimes moves around the page. We are not sure how to get rid of it and guessing its some sort of virus. I have tried print screening it but it does not show up when the print screen is pasted. Any ideas how to get rid of it? And no it isn't a real spider thats got into the screen lol. Thanks
LosOjos Posted June 22, 2011 Posted June 22, 2011 Sounds like a bug... on a serious note - have you tried running Spybot S&D (or some other spyware scanner) to see if that picks anything up? Also, I assume there is anti-virus in place and a scan has been run? Checked for any BHO's in IE? ActiveX components? All can be accessed via "Tools > Manage Add-ons" (if I recall correctly...) 1
Dom_ Posted June 22, 2011 Posted June 22, 2011 Apparently the 'screensaver' virus - check msconfig for any startup items relating to screensaver (or anything that looks dodgy) and stop them.
elsiegee40 Posted June 22, 2011 Posted June 22, 2011 I'd suggest downloading this: Microsoft Safety Scanner - Remove Spyware, Malware, Viruses Free and running in safe mode.
Marci Posted June 22, 2011 Posted June 22, 2011 Won't be a malicious virus, will just be a screenmate app someone's installed at somepoint. Your technician should be able to find out the process name by looking at running processes in Task Manager. Use MSConfig to then remove it from startup items... and find and replace in regedit to blitz it out of there. Once done, run Spybot S&D and HiJackThis on it just to tidy up anything that may have been left lying around by the various toolbars.
sonofsanta Posted June 22, 2011 Posted June 22, 2011 Malware Bytes is also a good option, that's cleared toolbar crap up for me in the past
