penfold Posted June 22, 2011 Posted June 22, 2011 I've got a couple of laptops in today that have connected to our wireless network. Once connected they need to navigate to an authentication page via their web browser and login using the creditials given to them which then allows them internet access. This normally works fine, but today I have had 2 users with problems browsing to the authenitcation page. The browser just responds with unable to connect which is because they haven't logged in, but they cannot log in because their browser wont browse the internet. I have tried different browsers, resetting the laptops and turning off the firewall. Still it doesn't make any difference. The thing is, the wireless works with other laptops and other devices so our wirless settings seem ok, but for some reason these laptops cant browse the web. Is there something I have overlooked or can check to see if makes any difference. I can also ping from these laptops, it seems only the browser is affected, it just so happens that it's the browser thats needed. Can anyone offer me any advice on what I can check. These people are not in after today so chances are I wont be able to resolve it, but it would be good to know any checks I can make for future reference....I feel a bit stupid when things that should work dont and I dont know why.
jamesrobinson Posted June 22, 2011 Posted June 22, 2011 have you tried proxy settings, set them to automatically detect, i know sometimes that happens here and there is panic from the teachers.
januttall Posted June 23, 2011 Posted June 23, 2011 are other machines able to gain acces to the splash screen and if so it may be worth reinstalling the browsers on the machines. or trying a difrent browser perhaps. you could probably test the browsers by pluging them into the network via a cable it might point you in the right direction as to what is wrong if nothing else.
penfold Posted June 24, 2011 Author Posted June 24, 2011 Checked different browsers, same thing. There was no access to test a wired connection to check either. There is no one using it now so I cant check any more ideas, but I just wanted some incase I come accross it in the future. Cheers
jtmputerfix Posted July 8, 2011 Posted July 8, 2011 Check the hosts file in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc . Make sure that the hosts file is not redirecting all Internet requests to 127.0.0.1 . Would also try to reset Winsock and Winsock 2 in tcp/ip stack. NETSH is a command line util to reset tcp/ip stack to default. Hope this helps
