HP Printer moving letters

Our HP printer has been having a strange issue recently, every now and then it will miss out a letter or leave a slight mark where the letter should be, this will often happen once per page of writing so its not a very common problem. It will then print the letter about 6 lines down and fairly faint. Is this a case of ghosting and is anyone able to offer any advice? The printer is still just under warrenty so if its anything other then a minor issue it might as well go back.

Try updating the drives or using the PS ones if they are avalible.

If it is under warranty - don't waste your time - send it back. I am sure you have loads of other things you need to be getting on with

Is the problem repetative in the same place across the width of the page?

If there is a mark where the letter should be and it appears further down the page It could be offsetting, due to a fuser defect.

Use the cleaning test page, this should show if it's a physical printer issue or not.

I've printed a test page and the mark appears to be almost the same location as on 2 other print outs staff have done and told me about so I'd say its hardware rather then software. I'll look into swap under warrenty.

As both the Photosensitive drum and fixing units have a surface area much smaller than the paper size any defects in drum or fuser are repeated at exactly the same distances down the printed page eg if the fuser roller was 10cm in circumfrence you will get a repeat mark every 10cm down the page however this will not always start in the same place!

If the drum is damaged this is normally accompanied by lines from the cleaning assy hence why I suggested that the fuser is the most likely cause.

 

Like most manufacturers they may try and attribute any damage whatsoever to the users misuse or neglect and fixing units have a service life anyway so they may even attribute it to fair wear and tear...
