morganw Posted June 18, 2011 Posted June 18, 2011 I've found that when I create a mandatory profile for Windows 7 (by copying the default profile from the workstation - as supported by Microsoft), logging in with this profile takes about 1 minute 30 seconds. The two bits where it seems to pause for a while are 'Applying Folder Redirection' and 'Preparing Desktop'. The same delays occur when logging and building a letting a local profile build. If I make a profile by an unsupported method (i.e. log in with an account then using Windows Enabler to get a copy of the resulting profile) it only takes about 10 seconds to log in. Is it normal for the default mandatory profile from a Windows 7 install to take 1 minute 30 seconds to log in?
SYNACK Posted June 18, 2011 Posted June 18, 2011 Look through the event log to see exactly what stage of the process is causing the delay, it could be something to do with network conditions or permissions etc.

Dave84 Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 That Windows Mail thing doesn't help but it shouldn't slow it down by that much. If you remove the stubpath value from the registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{44BBA840-CC51-11CF-AAFA-00AA00B6015C} it should stop that error appearing. Also what antivirus are you using?
morganw Posted June 20, 2011 Author Posted June 20, 2011 I think as part of the profile setup it generates about 12mb of mailbox data for the user, then initiates a backup of it which adds another 2mb. Overall the profile picks up about 20mb of data during the login. Thanks for the registry tip, I'll take a look. Antivirus is Microsoft Forefront Endpoint Protection 2010.

featured_spectre Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 Take out Windows mail, use Outlook as a part of office and exchange server and profile won't grow to more than 5mb (ours hover at around 2.9mb fully loaded)

morganw Posted June 20, 2011 Author Posted June 20, 2011 I haven't at the moment, went the last year without Quicktime and was okay but now I've got there some iPods Touchs floating around for educational purposes so I need iTunes somewhere to let teachers updates Apps and such. Not my idea and I'm not convinced it's a good one, not particularly keen on everything Apple related being managed through music and app stores with no enterprise tools. With my profile speed issue I've only got Smartboard Notebook (and it doesn't seem to be copying masses of stuff into the profile) and LanSchool installed. The only thing generating sizable files is Windows Mail.

BWMerlin Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 Thanks so much for this, we have been having this problem since rolling out Windows 7 and keep getting pestered by staff as to why it takes so long for students to logon. Disabling the Windows Mail registry key has cut down login time to about twenty seconds in my testing so I am about to use Group Policy to apply this to all our lab machines and see how that goes.

apeo Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 Just wondering if there anything else to look for with regards to a delay 'Preparing your Desktop'. Seems we have ~20 delay at this point.
gshaw Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 Just timed ours, 10-13 seconds at the moment. Check in Event Viewer > Applications & Services Logs > Microsoft > Group Policy to see what's taking the time. Mine has a 10 second delay in processing User Policy I might take a look at to see if I can cut that down at all. Killing the WinMail key makes a big difference, once that's down and the GPOs suggested in the other thread not sure how much more can be done.
