In the words of the developers...

We have just published a new kernel and we are getting ready to release version 0.31 of FOG (maybe early next week).

Watch for a release next Monday....

I'm looking forward to it, apparently they are switching over to a java from php?

It's still very much php for the time being.

The new release is a major interface revamp, I'm not sure what additions or improvements have been made. Looking at the FOG forums there's a lot of activity now on tweaking the code and bug fixing in general. I think I'll stick with 0.29 for now and wait and see what the general consensus is - I got very poor performance from 0.30 so would be interested to hear if that's been addressed in 0.31.

FOG is probably the best software we have on site :)

mmmm x2 that!

so glad i gave it another chance and tried the init.gz from .29 - it works so much better! Fog was being read its last rights before i heard that little gem. Im hoping it doesnt backtrack again and degrade further.. :S

What is the init.gz you speak of?

We use 0.29 at the moment but don't know what that means!

i only really learnt enough to get me through what i needed, so if i get something wrong, somebody correct me please.

the init.gz file is a compressed linux image which loads and contains the menu system - the inventory, quick image etc etc screen.. Ours is in /root/boot/init.gz

i wasnt't getting very good throughput with the loader from .30 so copied the one from .29 over the top. and it seems to be ok.

hope that helps, and as always - Your Mileage May vary.

For v0.30 there was a big update to the init.gz, moving to the use of "busybox" which made the PXE downloaded component much smaller (6Mb as opposed to about 30Mb for 0.29). However, many people reported very poor download/imaging performance with this version. One model of PC we use went from imaging in 5 mins to about 40mins with v0.30.

Rolling back the init.gz file to that from 0.29 solves the problem, but at the expense of some of the improvements to upload speeds which were also added in 0.30. This doesn't really bother most people though as the download speed is the important factor.

My advice would be stick with 0.29 for now if you're happy with how it performs. The interface rewrite in 0.31 is pretty major and there are fixes being reported and posted every day. I think it'll be a little while before it settles down.

I've been using 0.31 since Monday, haven't had a chance to test it a range of hardware yet but so far no slow downs when imaging. The new interface is a lot nicer to look at and faster, it isn't finished though, the frontpage is a little buggy and the imaging history chart is just a fake placeholder. I definitely didn't image 400 PCs last week. Still no deployment of a single snap-in for groups though!
