Hi,

I want to setup a KMS server to activate Server 2008 R2 Servers (Standard & Enterprise) & Windows 7 Clients. I am looking at this guide: How can I setup a KMS server ? - www.windows-noob.com

It says run the following command to activate your KMS Key

cscript c:\Windows\System32\slmgr.vbs /ipk xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx

Now what key would i use? My Server 2008 R2 Key? Or do i run the command twice, one for each key?

Many Thanks

surely on your win7 clients you would use your Windows7 key and on your servers use your Server key. I don't see why you would use a Server key on a Windows 7 machine..

@ZeroHour posted the KMS keys you need to use in the licensing forum.

These would be put into the clients not the KMS servers. I am asking about the KMS Server :)

I also heard what @MGSTech said. So that what brought me to the question. Would i just run the command (on the KMS Server) twice then, one for each product? Or if the server key works just stick to that?

The server keys work for W7.

Edit: Just to add, it's best using the Datacenter key, that will activate any server or w7.

Excellent, although we dont use datacenter i assume the Enterprise key will be the one to use?

Yes, whatever is the highest version of 2008 R2 you have a KMS key for.

@ChrisH link seems to be blocked :(

What do you do with Office 2010? I see you download it from here and further reading here can you run the Office 2010 KMS on the same server as the Windows KMS?

Thanks

Yes, you can run the Office 2010 volume activation on the same KMS server, just download from the host license pack, run it and it will ask for your key.

Just to piggyback on this topic - I don't have a KMS key for Server 2008 R2, but do for Windows 7.

If I run the command in the 1st post with my Windows 7 key, it'll activate my windows 7 clients but not screw anything up with my server key, if that right?

Thanks!

Use a Windows 7 machine as your KMS host, with the Windows 7 KMS key (obviously, KMS client keys into the clients, use VAMT 2.0 to apply these centrally). You can't use Server 2008 R2 with a Windows 7 KMS key, I believe.

Yup your right, was in late tonight so gave the 7 KMS key a shot on 2008 R2 and it rejected it.

I should have an R2 KMS key comming through with the Select order I've put in so might just reassign the keys arround the servers to bring it onto the one I want. Faff? Yes, but then atleast I know where everything is. :)
