Pesky red ants

just let them be. What harm are they doing?

 

red ants bite/sting. if it were black ants i wouldn't worry as much, but red ants really do leave a nasty mark. so if you are in the garden then you are forever watching your feet.

 

we've used some ant!stop granules which seem to have really cut them down, noticed the largest mound yesterday had them bringing their dead to the surface. few nights ago i noticed them bringing their eggs to the surface too, so it must have been affecting them.

 

 

@witch i agree, the same goes for "darn", "flabbergaster" and in most places "thank you"

Not to derail the thread or anything...but has anyone else noticed how we use the word 'pesky' in written communications but it is never said in normal conversation?

You need some Nippon from Vitax. Stick 'Nippon ant killer' in to your search engine of choice and it should come up.

 

I've used it plenty of times when the ants which live in the garden decide they'd quite like to move in to the house. Squirt a drop on the ground on the routes they follow. The ants collect it and take it down to the nest and feed it to the larvae. They go mental for it.

is this stuff specific to red ants? as ive used something similar and it totally wiped out black ant nests but the red ants only a few died

i also assume that our red ants are still classed as fire ants?

I'm sure they all bite, but I doubt they are anything like as nasty as the "Fire Ants" that you'll read of on US sites. They are truly vile!

Bullet ants are true beasts...when I was in Brazil a few years back, had one bite me, literally felt like I had been shot. Not pleasant, any other ant sting is a walk in the park in comparison. Could not do anything for 2 days as it hurt that much! It was like fire-walking over lava with a 3-inch rusty nail in your leg (where I got bitten)

A rather eccentric friend of mine electrocutes all the beasties in his garden. He's a retired scientist so he knows what he's doing so I don't recommend it to the novice. He's zapped ants, moles and mice using the two probes he pushes in to the soil when it's wet. Guessing it's the domestic 240volts but I didn't hang around to find out the first time he did it!

Hi,

There is a biological control called nemasys (I think) which makes the ants move on as they can't stand the little blighters. If you do a big enough striup I guess it will stop them from comming near the house.

Red ants sting using Formic Acid which is the same component that's used by stinging nettles.

That I couldn't tell you. I've only had black ants in my garden.
