laserblazer Posted June 13, 2011 Posted June 13, 2011 I've just installed Malwarebytes on the bursar's own laptop which is XP Pro SP3. When I update I get an error message which googling reveals from MWB's forum Well the machine setup you describe is for a business machine not a consumer. The free product is not allowed to be used on any business type machine. If you wish for support on a business machine then you need to purchase a license for the product. However, if I run it on my school computer with the same OS, it updates ok and when I check the log, both computers have the same database version dated yesterday but hers has more fingerprints.
X-13 Posted June 13, 2011 Posted June 13, 2011 When you say the same version, what do you mean? WinXP SP3 on both? Even if it's the same version, the bursur's version may be an OEM version with something in it to let software know it's for business. Or malwarebytes can just tell you're trying to get away with not paying for it... If you can get hold of a build disk of some sort for the laptop try installing that on a computer and see how it handles with Malwarebytes. If it works then try reinstalling. What's the error message? "I'm sorry, Dave... I can't let you do that."
Domino Posted June 13, 2011 Posted June 13, 2011 Er, having just checked the licence on a Malwarebytes install, it says: 11. You may not use the Software for any commercial purpose. The License is for use on the personal or business computers of its owner only. So.....

laserblazer Posted June 13, 2011 Author Posted June 13, 2011 It's the free version. My OS is using our volume licence, the Bursar's is Toshiba OEM. So logically you'd have thought they would have more of a problem with mine than hers. I wasn't aware that there was an issue using the free version on school computer.

laserblazer Posted June 13, 2011 Author Posted June 13, 2011 The thing is, although it errors the latest update is installed. More to the point, It seems I shouldn't be using the free version in school and that I should buy a copy for every machine or get a corporate licence.

I just get the error message at the end of the update although the update is successful. I'm just curious to know why the OEM version gives the error message but the VLK version doesn't.
