Hi

I have ben offered a job about 70 miles away, i debated driving but when i did it it was 1 hour 45 mins, which i not do able on a aily basis.

The train is a straight line through, no changes. It would take me 30 mins to get to the station, then 50 mins on the train.

What do people thiink? too far or ok?

Depends. Some people would enjoy this and use the train part to prepare for the day and then wind down. I wouldn't do it though as I have a family and would rather spend as much time at home with the wife and child.

You'd find it very tiring. I used to do a fifty mile each way motoring commute and would be exhausted by the weekend if I'd had a full on week with lots of stress and running around. Is moving closer to the job not an option?

mrwITch does that drive every day and says he is OK with it - it depends if you can avoid traffic - he leaves at 6.15 am and is at work by 8 and leaves at 4. But if you are going to be stuck in traffic I can see the problem.

BUT he only does it because he has a good job and there is nothing commensurate down here - he wouldn't by choice and it costs a fortune in travel expenses - have you factored that in?

When I were a lad and lived in Scotland, I used to drive 160 miles a day into/back from work. Did it for about 5 years. It is do-able but it does take it out of you. 30 mins to the station and an hour on the train would be better IMO, but it's still a lot of time travelling. Whether it is worth it, only you can decide.

Its 9 K more than i am on now. I need the experience and there is noting network/IT manager wise around here. They are closing/merging schools in lincs rather than recruiting.

I agree IT Manager roles are few and far between, especially in the private sector

On that basis I would probably take it - if the job is a good one and it isn't JUST for the money. But fuel if you drove would cost at least £3500, and training it includes time to park, time to wait for the train and the journey at the other end. Goodness knows how much a season ticket would be.

Can you move? If you could then I would take the job for a few months and if it turned out well, think about moving nearer to it

This is in a school, but round here no-one moves and they are closing schools, so there are more net mans than jobs.

I would take it as well, I dont expect a IT job recovery for 2 years

I do something similar at the moment. Roughly 1.5 - 2 hours car/train/tube/walking to get to work and the same to get home again. Much better role, much more money and a much better team of people to work with persuaded me to take the role. I am looking to move ASAP However!

Hope it keeps you fit, too, Soulfish!

It would be cheaper to move, do you have any family commitments? If not, look at places to rent in the area, then do that commute until you find somewhere.

Bring some books with you. I used to get the train, although it was only 30 minutes you can really get into reading during this time as you have no other distractions.

Apart from looking out the window, which depending on which area you are driving through can be quite relaxing for a while at least!!

I drive for about an hour and a half each way every day. It is tiring but I've got used to it, and the job is worth it. The train would leave you less tired so it should be a do-able journey. I'd love to have the option of the train, unfortunately it takes longer than driving and costs more so I only get it occasionally. More relaxing when you can read a book or something

You could always look for a weekday let nearby - somewhere that'll let you a room during the week. They're generally cheaper than whole-week lets and you might get breakfast thrown in.

I spend nearly an hour at the beginning and the end of the day travelling by train and foot. It is hard work and makes my day long. Once home in the evening just time to eat, watch a bit of telly and then bed. I personally wouldnt recommend that sort of length of journey, one reason for me looking for a new job, but if the job is really good and it will be difficult to find elsewhere then have a go!
