Securing HAP+

Whats the best way to make HAP as secure as possible over the internet, I am guessing disabling the HTTP option and only allowing HTTPS connections - if so are self signed certificates a no no and what other measures should be taken?

For example, what address would we enter in the common name field when registering the certificate?
