[netbook] Acer Aspire One D255E With Full Windows 7?

Hi,

 

I am looking at this Acer Netbook - Acer Aspire One D255E 10.1 inch Netbook (Intel Atom N455 Processor, 1 GB RAM , 250 GB HDD, Windows 7 Starter 32-bit, 4 hours battery life) - Black: Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories

 

I am just after your opinions. How well do you think this would run with the full version of Windows 7 please?

by full version you mean ultimate? yes it will but it will be sluggish as ultimate has a tonne more features!

Not specifically ultimate just not Windows Starter.

In terms of memory usage the difference between Home Premium and Ultimate is negligible (~25MB). The following screenshots were taken from clean installs of each version and both had 1GB RAM.

 

Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 (x64) - In Use: 376MB / Available: 610MB

Ultimate may have more features, but they aren't all running by default. I don't see how a difference of 25MB would make Ultimate sluggish?

I am stating from personal experience, as when I did a clean install, there was a vast difference on a machine not too dissimilar...

Unless you need the extra features that Ultimate has, I would buy the Windows 7 Starter to Home Premium Anytime Upgrade which costs £49.95 (vs £70.88 for a standard Home Premium license).

 

While RAM is still dirt cheap (£16.79-£17.00), I would also upgrade it to 2GB straight away regardless of the version of Windows installed.

@Arthur They where the lines i was thinking of. If i upgrade to 2GB do you think the CPU will slow things?

 

Im not going to be using it for anything special just the basics.

If you're the sort of person who opens lots of browser tabs at once, an Atom will struggle.

 

I regularly have 30-50 tabs open in Google Chrome and memory usage can be between 1-2GB just for the browser!
