Domino Posted May 27, 2011 Posted May 27, 2011 HTC to stop locking smartphone bootloader code ? reghardware So okay, this may not seem like a big deal immediately, but basically what we're seeing here is the manufacturer of a lot of the biggest selling android handsets listening to community requests and giving people an easy way to install a custom ROM, etc As Sony Ericcson are also releasing bootloader unlocks for their newer models, we may be looking at a shift in manufacturers perspective - and maybe modders/rooters won't be seen in such an unfavourable light Me likey! 4

They've not stated whether existing models will get the same treatment - but their facebook page seems to be a hive of activity at the moment, so might be worth keeping eyes open for more announcements....

Have rooted my HTC Desire and now running Cool-Aces-V6. I tried LeeDroid and NeoPhyte but they got stuck at the HTC loading screen. If anybody can tell my why they didnt work I would like to know.

It's possible that you didn't do a complete system wipe? There's an option in the bootloader to do this (it'll only wipe settings and cache, it won't touch your SD card) and quite often this needs doing when switching ROMs, sometimes even when you just upgrade a ROM EDIT: also, I strongly suggest you give CyanogenMOD and Oxygen a go - Cyanogen for bells and whistles, Oxygen for a very lean system
JJonas Posted June 6, 2011 Posted June 6, 2011 I did do a system wipe so that's not the answer. Cyanogen was the first ROM I tried but I like too many of the Sense features. Can someone run through how to revert back to a stock ROM? In case I need to send the phone off for a repair.

Exactly the same way you install any ROM, you just need to locate and download the zip (Google should bring back plenty of results). As for un-rooting, I'm not sure... although I don't think they'd be able to tell anyway (so long as you remember to uninstall any root only apps!)
SkywOrca Posted June 7, 2011 Posted June 7, 2011 I believe just installing your stock branded ROM will un-root the device, since the stock ROMs aren't rooted. Reversing any modifications to your HBOOT or recovery might not be quite so straightforward, however, but I'm sure I've seen copious numbers of guides out there, just search XDA-developers.

SkywOrca Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 Never tried holding the trackball down when turning the phone on, but you can access bootloader by holding Vol-Down whilst pressing the power button, from there you can get access to the recovery module, which is the section you would normally use to install new Roms. Also, on Oxygen (don't know what Stock / other Roms do) you get the option to Reboot into Recovery, Bootloader or back in normally. On my phone, for instance, I've now replaced my HBOOT (bootloader) with the Alpharev S-OFF one, the recovery module with Clockwork, and the main system Rom with Oxygen. Should I need to blast the phone back to stock I'd have to do some research on how to revert out some of the less obvious tweaks, but I'd hazard a guess that no-one at the phone company would even know, or bother, to check these things.

So long as you read the instructions (ideally twice just to make sure) and don't panic then it's pretty easy. I know there have been a few people who've had trouble but not heard of anyone bricking their phone, just need to be calm and patient. I did it ages ago and it's well worth it.

I also ran my patches whilst watching the video tutorial (for noobs!) on the XDA-dev desire forums (linkie) before starting, which helped prevent any silly errors. Didn't hurt that I'd let a guy at work run his patches before I did mine and learnt from a couple of mistakes he made (mainly with the partitioning with GParted, tbh, the Alpharev bit worked fine). The tutorial really does explain everything, though, so as long as you follow what he does as he does it you should be fine. To be honest, I don't think I've yet found anything I needed to do with my phone that required S-OFF, but I figured since I was remodding to Oxygen anyway I should just patch everything.

SkywOrca Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 (edited) Doesn't require a non A2SD rom, but they recommend that you don't have/use a data to SD features. I ran Alpharev over my old NexTsense Rom, which had Froyo A2SD and it was fine. The biggest headache I found with the Alpharev site was their ubergeeky lack of explanation of what their various re-partitioning schemes were for and/or the potential pitfalls that you could encounter from using them. Unless you really want to repartition your root filesystem, just pick the generic download at the top. Edit: Alpharevving a rooted stock rom is easily the best way to ensure that you have nothing peculiar happen, so you should be fine. Just follow all the advice, also ensure your battery is fully charged, and make sure you don't use that old broken USB cable that you have that sometimes cuts out whilst plugged in. You need to ensure the connection to the computer is available constantly throughout the process. Best of luck, you'll be fine! Edited June 8, 2011 by SkywOrca

Err, confused. The only time you change your HBOOT is when you Alpharev. And you can happily re-mod your phone after you've installed Alpharev. Usually the only problem you might bump into whilst modding your phone is that you haven't wiped enough of the various caches etc. So long as you don't do silly things, like yanking a USB cable out mid-process, or switching the phone off a mod should go through fine. I nearly always panic a little bit after a mod when the initial boot up takes AAAGES, but after that it's usually fine. Just follow the noob's video tutorial and you shouldn't have any issues. Edit: sorry, I just worked out what you meant by the HBOOT thing. Yes, if you use a customised HBOOT that tweaks the partitions specifically for certain roms (like the Oxygen one, which creates extremely small system partitions in favour of expanding the apps part) then you might find your chunky Sense 3.0 + all the bells and whistles rom won't fit. That's why I suggested just using the stock partitioned HBOOT from Alpharev. Incidentally, if you ever did do this and found that your rom installation fails, you should still be able to access the HBOOT/recovery screens, so you should always be able to extract yourself from the doodoo. No reason why it should no, I installed AlphaRev long after Clockwork with no problems. Goign back to restoring it to factory state for repair, I agree with @SkywOrca that it's very unlikely a techie would check or care, but if you are worried then the biggest giveaway will be the AlphaRev boot screen (Heath Ledger's Joker, randomly?), but that can easily be replaced and I'm sure the original HTC one will be online somewhere for you to use
