just how important is the description on a xp machine? i.e the box by the join a domain or workgroup

i jujst had a conversation with someone who thought that its quite important to set the infomation?

i thought it was just an easier way to id the machine on a network??

I find it useful to set it to it's location and/or function. It helps when you come to the machine 6 months later and don't remember where it was precisely.

oh right ok cool so its has nothign really to do with the running of xp?

No, it's purely there as an optional setting. If you do set it you should see the machine descriptions in the network neighbourhood.

Also note this is a separate setting from the 'description' setting in AD.

I use the description, but purely to store two values. 'staff build' and 'student build' so if we get a machine in, we know if it needs the staff or student image if we're not 100% sure where it came from.
