Pre Configured Joomla Install for Edugeek Members?

Have been thinking about this for some time, and after seeing this

I have decided to create one for Edugeek members for free.

 

What do you think? Would it be something you would find useful?

 

Currently putting together a site with dummy conent and a few add-ons to start with.

The plan is to first create a basic site with the kind of content items that a schools site would need plus menu structure in place. Plus a good template and some eye candy features like lightbox etc. Also some mods like document manager / calendar.

 

This can then be used to create a site that just needs the content edited to be correct to the school.

The only thing I would note is that you need to ensure that the system is secure and stays up to date with all patches, etc... as exploits and the like become known.

 

In that respect running phpBB2 sites has been nothing short of a nightmare so I'd consider that side of things very carefully and make sure that anyone who signs up to use it has to accept security updates and announcements.

This is true. The idea is to give people a way to setup their site easily and quickly. After that it will be the responsibility of the use to then keep their site upto date.

 

Although I would keep the package upto date also

Seriously, I'm off to a Lancs Development Group Meeting on Monday where the issue of why we have to pay for a CMS when everything else is "free" should be on the agenda (if D_B is kind enough ) so at least I've got an alternative to go to if my efforts to get a change prove fruitless (as no doubt they will )

If you're up for it I have a subversion server space where you could develop and keep track of changes if you're up for it... It'd help me as I'm looking to develop a few mods (calendar, download manager, directory system) for use with this as well as a few other systems (eg: phpBB), etc...

I have a setup ready for download now.

 

The download contains a pre configured Ravenswood server so you can just unzip and run.

 

Just PM for the download link.

I've unzipped the Ravenswood to my c: drive - ran joomla.exe - got starting mysql,apache and joomla in a cmd shell box.

 

Then got a Windows error popup saying

"can't find w:\home\admin\WWW\redirect.html ... make sure path and filenames are correct and that all required libraries are available"

 

Running on Win2000 just in case that's the problem.

First thing first, thanks to those of you who have shown an intrest and are currently taking alook at this.

First make sure no other apache / Mysql services are running on your machine. Then try right clicking on the joomla icon in the task bar and choosing joomla home.

 

Have yet to get any feed back from people, so don't be shy, let me know what you think. Don't want to carry on if people think i'm on the wrong track.

I'm not conciously running anything - why does the error refer to a W: drive?

Is this a drive letter on your system?

No W: is not from my system

 

w: should have been created by the ravenswood server. This holds the site / apache / myqsl data. - make sure it has been mapped

MySQL 4.x

Joomla is driving me insane. I downloaded MySQL 5 and PHP 5.somthing and i can get to install1.php then install2.php is just a blank page with no errors. Looking around a few people have this and fix it by going to older versions of MySQL and PHP, but can i find them anywhere for download???

Have you thought about using an easy to install Apache/MySQL/PHP package such as WAMP?

Cannot have Apache on this box has to be using IIS as other services are running on this box through IIS.
