Hey,

 

Just a little program I've been playing with.

 

Started off due to students constantly leaving computers locked (and fast-switch is disabled by default), so only easy way to log people off was by force shutdowns. Obviously not good

 

Thus EduRemote was born!

 

Allows easy logoff (which works even if computer locked), shutdown, and reboot of networked computers.

 

Tried and tested on wired/wireless, and Win 7.

 

(Note, Changed a few things from the original copy I made so I may have broken something As I can't test it at home really, so if anyone notices anything major broke shout please!)

Looks good, nice work Steve:) It's such an annoyance having to force a shutdown when a user leaves win 7 client locked.

 

I have a problem though. Trying to run the application from a Windows XP Pro and I get the error message attached. Runs fine from Window 7 enterprise.

Nope, it doesnt, However the windows 7 enterprise doesnt either. Why does that work then:eek:

Going out on a limb here....why not just disable locking for students?

That's why EduRemote doesn't work on XP then.

 

The reason Windows 7 is fine is because the .NET Framework (v2.0 SP2, v3.0 SP2 and v3.5 SP1) are already installed by default.

Aye as mentioned win7 has the framework built into the OS.

 

And lock is useful! Don't expect/trust students to not play with unattended machines

At times a student needs to lock the computer Maybe they are quickly going to the toilet, or collecting a print out. We all know how kids like to be mischevious. It only takes stepping away from a computer for 30 seconds and you could have someone doing all sorts of nasty things!

That sounds like a classroom management issue rather than an IT issue to be honest.

I'm attempting to run it on Windows 7 with Windows XP Professional SP3 (with .NET 3.5 SP1) as the remote machine.

All I get is "Error: The computer is offline, or the name doesnt exist". I am able to connect to the remote machine with VNC and remote desktop, however.

 

Maybe it doesnt work on XP at all?

It works with XP I use it often

 

If you're getting that error, it's just my debug version of the original error:

 

The RPC server is unavailable. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x800706BA)

 

Suggesting one of four things:

 

a) Firewall is blocking the WMI calls

b) Hostname is wrong, or computer shutdown.

c) TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper service isn't running

d) Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service isn't running

e) Windows Management Instrumentation isn't running

 

It's 99% one of those 5 things As mentioned on the site, The computer has to be accepting WMI calls (aka the above running), or it won't work.

 

Suggest you check if those are active on the XP machine. If they are, and you get same problem will look into it a bit more

That's not an error from my program, it's your computer as such.

 

Three options really:

 

a) Your account isn't admin on both computers (Needs admin access)

b) You're not running it as UAC-elevated if it's enabled

c) Your DCOM settings aren't setup. If you're not admin, you need to enable remote access. (or use "netsh firewall set service RemoteAdmin enable" on remote computer)

 

But the majority of this shouldn't need editting, If you're admin on both, and have access to WMI in the first place?

I think I asked this somewhere before (Can’t really remember if I did and certainly don’t remember the answer)

How hard/is it possible? Would it be to make this an app for iPhone’s etc.? Personally I think it would be really good if you could use this from your phone because I usually end up in the situation where a student cant log on because someone has left the computer locked, and I’m nowhere close to using a computer of my own to load this application.

Most people always carry their phone around, so if you could use this from your phone it would be really awesome and handy.

Honestly, I don't know As long as cocoa etc accepts the WMI calls it should work, but will have to check it out. I'm out for holiday the next two weeks, but I'll try to have a play once back and see what I can do
