1000's of hits on configuration.apple.com

I'm sure safari didn't use todo this, we're getting hundreds of thousands of hits to these plists like: http://configuration.apple.com/configurations/internetservices/safari/ConfigurationsMac-5.0.5.plist.signed anyone know why it is checking these so obsessively? It rather skews our auditing for student web access making it hard to spot if the kids have discovered an anonymizer or similar!

Its the "Live" search mechanism... I Think.

Because the search bar now uses Google's service to provide results/suggestions as you type... it reads from that plist for the settings on how the search box should work.

 

Could always try switch to a different search engine or somehow switch off live results.

If you open that URL the XML shows the 'suggestion url' for google,yahoo and bing (not results themselves) ... so doesn't really explain why they are being accessed so often. Will dig around the safari plists!

I have two sites, at one I'm getting 1000s of hits per day and a hefty amount of downloaded traffic over a few days, at the other I am seeing no hits to configuration.apple.com sites.

 

I have no idea why?
