WS Security or simsperm.bat

Done a quick search for this on the forum and nothing came up. Im not clued up on Sims at all and only install it on staff laptops all the while.

 

But as part of the dredful repetative task of installing I have been told to finish the installation by running WS Security.

 

Now as far as im aware ws security is an application that brings up the cmd window and lists everything on the system drive. Whilst its doing that it's supposed to be changing folder permissions.

 

Now would sims really bring out an application that would change the permissions of every file for it to work correctly and if so then wouldnt this ws security need to be ran everytime a new file is created?

 

Anyone else heard of it? I noticed you guys use simsperm.bat

 

Is that what is supposed to be ran after the install or does that happen anyway?

 

Sorry I know these may appear noobish to you but its a real headache trying to figure out why certain things are done when the answer I get doesnt make sence.

Never heard of WS security techyphil. I use simsperm after every fresh install - then never again.

 

First run simsinst, then when that's completed, manually run simsperm. I've never seen advice about re-running simsperm after upgrades, and have wondered about it in the past.

 

If were lucky a passing Capita employee may pop in and put our minds at rest!

Earlier versions of SIMS required WS setup running.

 

If you arn't giving the users local admin level access to the PC, then you'll need to run SIMSPERM.bat (with argument - user or group)

 

Alternativly you could create a custom GPO to replicate the permissions.

Never heard of WS Security. As said above it's probably a garbled reference to SIMSPERM.BAT.

You still need the 16-bit workstation set up on new versions if you are still running Nova-T 4, Options and Personnel 5

For Nova-t4 you just need a copy of bwcc.dll putting in your system folder.

So let me get this right...

 

ws security is like a batch file whilst its running. Takes 3-5mins for it to complete. Ive never used simsperm.bat - I take it that does the same then and we just call it that.

 

Does simsperm.bat take minutes or seconds?

 

Also do you need to do both and whats it actually do. I know its does permission settings somewhere but to what? All the files?

 

As for moving the bwcc file to the system folder - is that an alternative?

 

We are using Nova-T4. Thanks

I was just on the phone to a guy from Capita with reguards to other issues and I asked him about this ws_security.

 

He said that the ws_security is what they at the office use and his son created it. It sets the system up ready to install sims and make sure the permissions are correct and a few paths are in place.

 

He also said its better to run it before installing SIMS.

 

I said about the simsperm.bat and he told me thats the older version they used a while ago.

 

So let me know if you guys want a copy of ws_security

The purpose of simsperm.bat was to elivate permissions to allow non-admins to update SIMS.Net when SIMSLoad detects new setup files on the S: drive.

 

For actually installing SIMS there has nver actually been problem becuase either an administrator would do it manaully or via StartUp scripts or GPO which run in the SYSTEM context.

 

Is ws_security a script or an EXE?
