witch Posted May 8, 2011 Posted May 8, 2011 I have finally put my new netbooks on my Meru wireless network but I have an odd situation where sometimes one, two or several netbooks lose the ability to browse the internet. They are still on the domain and can reach the server and all the shared drives etc. I cannot see anything wrong anywhere. The internet is accessed via a caching server. Can anyone tell me what is happening?
featured_spectre Posted May 8, 2011 Posted May 8, 2011 Can you bypass the caching server and get out that way??
glennda Posted May 8, 2011 Posted May 8, 2011 (edited) My guess would be a problem with the caching server- what is it running? doesn't sound like a driver issue as it can still see domain. EDIT: does the caching server have any logs - so they show up anything? Edited May 8, 2011 by glennda
irsprint84 Posted May 8, 2011 Posted May 8, 2011 I know it sounds daft but have you got apple products on them? have you seen if there are two gateways?
witch Posted May 9, 2011 Author Posted May 9, 2011 caching server is fine - all computers on the domain can reach the internet with no problems whatsoever. This is only affecting a small minority of the netbooks - maybe 4 at a time out of 16 and not always the same ones. I havent been able to see one actually doing it (but I do trust the teacher who told me, he is very computer savvy) so I havent been able to bypass the caching server. Logs on the caching server show nothing wrong.
plexer Posted May 9, 2011 Posted May 9, 2011 If they cannot access internet via proxy server sounds like the browser is losing proxy settings? Ben
chrbb Posted May 9, 2011 Posted May 9, 2011 This happens on some of our laptops, logon, logon script runs, all drives available printers etc. Open up IE, page not available, if I take off the proxy settings I get the same error page but it takes longer to load. Put proxy settings back on IE loads instantly with page not available. I can ping Google. I've narrowed it down to certain access points but not sure what the problem is. If I plug a network cable in to the laptop that can't browse it solves the problem straightaway and the ability to browse stays even when I then take the cable out.
Brpilot99 Posted May 9, 2011 Posted May 9, 2011 I would take the caching server out of the equasion by making a new group policy to send out the SWGFL proxy settings to the netbooks only rather than the caching server settings ... if the fault stays then delete the policy also have you checked the error logs on the netbooks that failed ? might show something. Could be an access point thats the problem ... or maybe even one channel ... In one of my schools channel 6 will not work attall ... Checking with inssider shows ch6 has multiple dropouts!! only at one end of the school!!
witch Posted May 9, 2011 Author Posted May 9, 2011 Hmm - on further investigation I am only getting this report from one teacher so maybe it is the access point that is the issue. How would I check? There is nothing reported on the management side of things
ricki Posted May 9, 2011 Posted May 9, 2011 HI I am guessing here but my guess is that they are not picking up group policy we had this at one of the primary schools I worked at. What we had to do was make sure that windows controlled the driver and not the wifi program that came with the wifi card or chip by removing the drivers and software for the wifi and then detecting the change in hardware and only installing the driver so windows controlled the wifi. Because windows controlls the device it starts before the user logs on so policies are pulled in. We also had to set in the gpo wait for the daomain before logging on so that if someone tried to log on before the wifi negotiated it would wait for the network. Richard
chrbb Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 (edited) My problem still remains, laptop connects to network, but no internet access, not dns problems because I can ping google. If I go into advanced network settings and make one small change for example tkip to aes Internet access is then restored. Any ideas anyone before this drives me crazy. Edited May 11, 2011 by chrbb
cpjitservices Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 I'd look at changing your authentication type and possibly try assigning static IP's see if that makes a difference.
cpjitservices Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 see if you can connect to the suspected faulty AP, and run Wireshark see if you can see where abouts it loses internet connection you may even see errors appearing authentication and the likes
witch Posted May 12, 2011 Author Posted May 12, 2011 The AP isnt suspected faulty - all tests check out fine including Wireshark and laptops can connect to it with no problems at all. Except for a handful that cannot connect to the internet at some point during a session. It seems to be affecting one room ATM so maybe it is due to distance from AP. Having said that, it could be affecting every single room and I just havent been told
featured_spectre Posted May 12, 2011 Posted May 12, 2011 Add in an AP in the room if possible, see if that solves the problem
witch Posted May 12, 2011 Author Posted May 12, 2011 Nice idea but I havent any spares and unfortunatly borrowing one won't help as there is no connection in the classroom that I can use. The school is arranged in separate blocks with two classrooms in each block (sort of permanent temporary rooms, if you see what I mean) and there is an AP for each pair.
_Adam_ Posted May 12, 2011 Posted May 12, 2011 Same problem experienced here. I am interested to see if anyone works it out. We do a quick fix of Internet Options -> Advanced -> Reset. Get's it going. It's not group policy, not the cache server, most likely something in the latest image. 1
cpjitservices Posted May 12, 2011 Posted May 12, 2011 Could it be an authentication issue with a proxy ? - so it may be dropping dropping authentication for some reason and then when everything is reset it re-authenticates and is allowed access ? Maybe it's logon > then when you click your browser it authenticates against the proxy and it passes authentication but then for some reason drops out so when you reset the connection or settings it re-authenticates
