Gardinho Posted May 5, 2011 Posted May 5, 2011 Hi guys, What are your thoughts on the MCITP certifications? I have recently passed MCITP:EDST, and I am currently working towards the MCITP:SA. I have been working in the IT industry for 10 years, including the last 6 years as a Network Manager. Every job I look at is looking for MCSE/MCSA. I guess this is probably because a large percentage of people are still running 2003 servers. Cheers for any input.
plexer Posted May 5, 2011 Posted May 5, 2011 As far as I can see MCITP:SA and EA translate to the MCSA/MCSE yes they are different versions but the application of the knowledge you have is the same really. I just passed MCITP:SA and the exams are all based on 2008 R2 yet the certficates still on say Server 2008. Ben
Gardinho Posted May 5, 2011 Author Posted May 5, 2011 Thanks Ben. I am halfway through the 70-640 training book. Do you think there will be much more to learn for the R2 exam? I don't want to fork out for another book just for a couple of questions! I know someone who is just starting MCSE now. He tells me it's still better to do that now, rather than MCITP. I thought MCSE was on old technology (2003), so opted for MCITP. What's your thoughts on that?
plexer Posted May 5, 2011 Posted May 5, 2011 I took the line of the fact that I am workign with 2008 so the MCITP:SA seemed to be the best direction. You need to know whats new in 2008 R2 and things that require a 2008 or w008 R2 functional level. Allthough the only thing that needs an R2 functional level is the AD recycle bin I think. I have a tip sheet you're welcome to if you want it. Ben 1

Most of my experience is on 2003, but we recently upgraded our entire server infrastructure to 2008R2 on VMWare ESXI servers. I must say, I really like Server 2008R2.

I thought as much. I hope Human resource departments and potential employers will recognise the MCITP as the new MCS*!
plexer Posted May 5, 2011 Posted May 5, 2011 On one of the certification forums there was this sort of discussion and it was suggested to list the MCITP:SA and EA as an equivalent to MCSA/MCSE so that if that's what people are looking for they will pick up on it. Ben

ChrisH Posted May 5, 2011 Posted May 5, 2011 I have an MCSA and I am current doing the MCITP:SA and maybe EA I have done 70-680 and 70-640 so far and I can say the SA is the equivalent of the MCSA but..... the SA will expire when 2008 does. MCSA won't expire but it is obviously tested on old versions. I'm sure Ken with his certificate list that is long as your arm, might have a few words on the subject.

Depends who is actually doing the recruiting, even some big companies will get external agencies in once the CVs have been sent to the company themselves (Vodafone did this with Reed, even for some reasonably low internal jobs!) and they may not understand the terminology. I had to explain what an MCSE & MCSA were to the last agency I went to - sneakily applied for the same job through two different agencies and the one that didn't understand got me an interview from which I was offered the job towards the top of the advertised salary band. The other said I didn't meet all of the prospective employers requirements!
